Having read in advertisings that L'Houstalet was celebrating its 40th anniversary, we decided to give it a try. Order: house white and red wine, 1 beef filet green pepper sauce and a coconut crab (the latter is an important culinary reason why we came to Vanuatu; we have already bought a live crab at the market a few days before... Two couples went out for a few drinks and a bite to nibble on whilst chatting. No one else in the bar so poor atmosphere. Ordered four pizzas and waited over an hour for them to arrive. It was then 9:30. As we started our pizzas were presented with our bill and advised closing time 10pm. Had we got our... More

We came because it was recommended by a local American who reckoned it was the best value and most genuine nosh in Port Vila. We were not disappointed. The French onion soup was superb and we went for the signature mains. The fruit bat very rich and strong but cooked to falling apart perfectly, in a terrific winey sauce. The... More

This was a very old style restaurant - in fact not changed for 40 plus years. The furniture and decor were certainly an indicator of that. The owner was very gracious and the food was very good. I had a mussel land prawn spaghetti and my husband the 'flying fox' which he really enjoyed. We had gone here especially because... More

We went there for a family dinner while we were holidaying in port Vila. The food was s**t. Worst pizza I have ever eaten. Who would put tasty cheese on a pizza rather than the normal mozzarella. Completely ruined the flavor. The salt and pepper shakers were old and crappy and when I asked for the dressing for my salad... More

Tried four times to have our order taken but it would appear that the owner/Maitre'd was the only person allowed to take our order? Certainly looking as though it's far past it's hey day and given the other reviews here, it would seem the food was not worth hanging around any longer for!

The title of the review says it all. I really love restaurants where the staff have been there ages and know the menu, the staff all are super friendly and helpful, the owner comes and talks to you and the focus is on the food, the food and the food. This is all of these things. Oh and it has... More

This 40-year old restaurant looks like a saloon but charms once you're inside. It's credited as the place Vanuatu's independence was born. Coconut crab bisque & garlic snails are both must-haves. The signature flying fox in rich red wine might be an acquired taste however. Loved the prawn & mushroom gratin before putting my mouth back together with a creamy... More

We went to this restaurant because we thought we'd give such a "Port Vila institution" a go. What a mistake! The whole place has such an air of faded affluence about it; as though it once used to be great but is now simply trading on a long-gone reputation for being a great night out. For somewhere that's supposed to... More
