Was looking forward to this restaurant as I had seen good reviews. Made our way by local bus for lunch only to be told the could not fit us in. They had a function with 35 people outside and no one else inside. First time this has happened to me. Very inhospitable and dis appointing.

We are a family of foodies and know some of the best restaurants in Noumea. We went to the 1881 last month for the first time. We loved the soothed atmosphere, nice dishes and the kindest team with Philemo, the unforgettable Maitre d'Hotel. Therefore, we decide to have lunch there at least once a month. Soon, there will be Mother's... More

This restaurant, named after the year when political prisoners were transported to New Caledonia, is the best alternative to Le Roof. It is located in the university area so a bit out of the way, but the terrace on stilts over the water is great as is the food. Copious and savoury with good service I would recommend the experience.

It's near the Anse Vata and convenient for a first date or meeting with friends. Good atmosphere in the evening with the light cubes. You can order the pizza to the pizza restaurant just next and eat them at the bar. The owner is very friendly and do not hesitate to offer drink when he and you feel confortable.

We did the Taste of 1881 through p&o whilst cruising the Pacific Islands. Tour was really good, the only thing I would suggest is maybe a savoury option would have been nice as it was around dinner time. But still very worth doing !!

This gem of a restaurant isn't easy to find, but once you're there you'll be blown away by its casual elegance and quality of food. Top class oysters followed by duck cooked to perfection, then a mouth watering creme brûlée. The wine list was excellent and the staff attentive but not overbearing. Top tip - after dinner take your drinks... More
