Nothing exceptional about Refik. We read a review and decided to go there but were underwhelmed by the food. Definitely on the pricier side

Refik is one of Istanbul's oldest and best-known meyhanes opened by Refik Aslan. Here yoy finf the best mezes from the ottoman period. The restaurant is very centrally located, the food is good and the environment is typical, authentic, traditional.

in a lively area of Istanbul not far off Istiklal, Refik was a great find. Perhaps the most tender and succulent chicken i have ever tasted. Delicious mezzes - cacik, iman baylildi - and delicious entrees - shish kebab and mixed grill. friendly staff, would highly recommend for authentic Turkish food!

Great food, the starters were all wonderful. Seaweed salad was good, squid was so tender, great flavours. Main course sea bream was great, melted in the mouth.

Beyoglu is (or better: was) famous for its 'meyhane's', places where one went for raki or wine and meze and all evening discussions, once popular with cigarette-smoking intellectuals and artists. They were concentrated near the Balikpazari-fishmarket and the Tünel, especially around Asmalimescid Street. And the best and most popular meyhane's were the one's run by a strong and engaging personality,... More

Recommended in Rough Guide Istanbul. Don't rush to this place/ I suspect they aren't trying because they know they're listed. Alright is all I can say about this place.

Our five point review: 1. Tucked into a side street off the westside of the main Istaklal Caddessi, Refik was, in the low season, the only busy meyhane amongst many 2. We were booked two spots right by the window by our hotel concierge, and the staff made sure to take care of us, showing off their various wares as... More

This is a very old house and well-known by locals. The mezes ares tasty and among thje other options in Asmalımescit, this is the best. Better to make a reservation cause it is full especially on week-ends.

We were taken here by a friend who is Turkish. It did not seem that anyone spoke English. We had a few mezes dishes to start which were fabulous and then a local fish, fried, was brought to the table with a fresh and wonderful salad. The fish was light and not oily at all. Wonderful experience.

Mezes were not especially good. Main dishes really disappointing. Dry, tasteless fish; lamb not good. Waiter unfriendly. Noisy. Cannot be recommended.

Staying in Beyoglu

Neighborhood Profile
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.
