One of the best meals ever

I had read good reviews here and decided to pay them a visit. I made reservations a day in advance through their web site and was glad to do so since they asked for it. The food has all been inspired from the Ottoman kitchen which makes it feel very royal. We are vegetarians and chose those options. The food... More

Our first visit to Asitane was mind blowing and so when we decided to return to Istanbul we said we must go back to the restaurant. The food was amazing again and the restaurant is beautiful we just found the service completely different to the first. Their was not the attention we received the first time or the atmosphere. But... More

Right next to the Kariye Museum and because they are both a bit out of the way from other attractions and/or attractive parts of Istanbul, I decided to time it so we entered museum just before it closed and then went to the restaurant thereafter. Also saw the walls of the city as this part of town is a great... More

This restaurant seeks to recreate Ottoman cuisine when it was at its best in the 16th century. If the stuffed melon is any indication, it's worth the trip in time. Visit the Chora Church museum too, it's right next door.

Asitane opened its doors in 1991, together with the Kariye Hotel, now a restored 19th century traditional Ottoman mansion. The restaurant, whose dishes reflect the eclectic nature of the Turco-Ottoman neighborhood, was named Asitane which not only means "Head Gate" in Farsi but was also one of the many names given to Istanbul throughout the reign of the Ottoman Empire.... We visited this location for the second time on June 10th ( dinner ) and our table of 7 was approximately 50% of all restaurant guest that night. We started out with various starters such as the almond soup and famous meat/melon dish. This part went well but the day old bread was the warning sign of whats to come.... More

Definitely some unique flavor combinations, but there are so many good turkish dishes that are just as interesting and a fraction of the price. We had fun trying it and by San Francisco standards it was affordable. The service is European and formal and the place caters to tourists primarily. We enjoyed the melon baked with lamb and I had... If you enjoy: Taking the road less traveled, and definitely away from the center of Old Town & other tourist areas. A trip to enjoy: Fine antiquity art that will give your neck a challenge, in spite of the small jewel setting :). Amazing. Possibly fine sunset views of the area from atop a Very high wall, (should you make... More
