i have been to istanbul five times. i have gone here every time, after an initial recommendation from a friend whose eyes got wide when i said i was going to istanbul. "you MUST visit this place. you'll understand when you go." i did understand. even if you're not a history nerd like me--even if the fact that all of... More

We had a lunch at Asitane Restaurant. Service was good, incredible choice of traditional Ottoman dishes. The taste was good, but not excellent.

This was an unexpected treat discovered while visiting the Chora Church. Asitane specializes in preparing food that was popular in the imperial kitchens during the days of the Ottoman Empire. Absolutely wonderful flavors. The sommelier, Nevzat, was extremely knowledgeable about Turkish wines and he paired our meal with a fruity Okuzgozu, that was appropriately priced for lunch and drinking great... More

Beyond anything we had expected. We are experienced travelers and this was, hands down, the best food we ever had.

I have been to Astine twice, and thoroughly enjoyed both visits. On my first visit, I was with two other friends, and ordered a chicken dish. On this past visit, I was with a group of around seven friends. I ordered a wonderful soup and I believe a lamb dish. It is the most perfect lunch place if you are... More

Just had lunch here. Smart comfortable restaurant right next door to amazing Chora church. Dishes from through the ages sounds a bit of a hostage to fortune but the food was first class. Nicely spiced, delicate tastes and very well cooked. Very friendly and professional staff and pleasant room. Quiet at this time of year but no doubt busy in... More

Difficult to believe that this is restaurant is ranked 141 and some of the spots in the most touristic areas are in the first position. Food here is very special, the place is beautiful and the surrounding area worth a walk in. All the Ottoman specialties are up to the expectations.

A well appointed beautiful restaurant with extremely friendly and efficient upfront staff. They also have a comprehensive wine list appropriate for the luxury of the restaurant. The restaurant brings old recipes from the Ottoman Empire to the table. We shared three appetisers and three mains. The presentation of the food was excellent and gave instant eye appeal. The stuffed calamari... More

Very nice place, great atmosphere. Service was excellent and very polite, food was delicious, especially the goose. We had a cold appetizer, 3 teas, 3 main dishes and 2 coffees and paid about 200 TL. But if you want coffee, then there's not much choice. Choose Turkish coffee, filter coffee meant instant coffee. That wasn't very good. But it was... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighborhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
