Worth the Walk

This restaurant was visited by Anthony Bourdain, so it is on the radar for many travelers to Turkey. We decided to walk over from our hotel in the Sultanahmet district and it was a decent walk, probably 20-25 minutes. We ordered 3 dishes for the two of us and it was plenty of food. Of course, we... read more

Nice people, great food. Hard to communicate for English speaking but nonetheless amazing. Get the beyti sarma or the buryan, either kind

visited during Ramadan, so no food served before sundown. Mostly local diners, and staff do not speak much English, but has an English written menu. They will also happily give you a taste of whatever happens to go past and you like the look of! grilled lamb ribs were in particular memorable. The dessert was excellent which my father and... We had many great meals during our stay in Istanbul, but this one reigns supreme. The famous lamb was so delicious that we requested a second order in addition to a mixed kebab platter. The plaza where is restaurant is located is right next to the old aqueduct and makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Anthony Bourdain was spot on with... More

Located under beautiful Istanbul's roman acquaduct Sur is a great hearthy restaurant. A place for those who like local food and don't care about fancy frills. Go for the mixed kebabs and for the amazing stir-fry like meat. A local speciality is the sweet and tender oven-cooked lamb, which I personally found not exceptional. The ayran (typical yoghurt-based drink) though... More

We asked our taxi driver, Ishan Aktur ( http://www.besttaxidriver.com ) to come with us to lunch at Sur Ocakbasi as it was one of the spots that Anthony Bourdain visited when filming "No Reservations" in Istanbul. We were certainly not disappointed, its a lovely location on the street near to the aqueduct and lots of street side tables to watch... More

Visited for lunch in a group. The mixed mezes with flatbreads were excellent but the stars of the show were the two big round platters piled high with a mixed grill on roasted bulgar wheat with vegetables and more mini breads. All absolutely delicious.

We had dinner here based on previous reviews. We paid a measly 58 TL for a huge, huge meal for two including two large meat platters, bread, ayraan, soft drinks and starters. The food was fresh, delicious and the lamb is sublime. Strongly recommended if you want a local experience and are hungry. Service was super attentive and food was... More

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighborhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
