Happened upon Matbah while we were walking from Aya Sofya to Topkapi. Their sea bass was excellent, as well as their "Zirba", a recreation of a 13th-14th century lamb dish with its complex flavors juxtaposing sweat/hearty. Although it costs more than the normal kebap restaurants which abound in Istanbul, the attentive service and quality of the food made it worth... More

Ambiance: Restaurant is located in central part of old town in walking distance from Hagia Sophia museum and Sultan Ahmet mosque inside Ottoman Hotel Imperial. We've been seated on open roof garden part which was nice during mild breezy weather. Food: My taste experience may be divided into two separate parts. As a starters I've tried Stuffed Vine Leaves, Babbaganush,... More

Wonderful dinner with friendly and helpful staff. Service is attentive but not overbearing. There is constant refilling of fresh cool water and bread throughout the meal. Everyone seems to speak English so it's no problem if you do not speak the local language. The menu is bilingual and offers original Ottoman-style dishes. Food quality was great and there is a... Visited this restaurant based on a recommendation by our hotel and our enthusiasm to try traditional Turkish food.I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. I had my doubts and was not expecting great food but actually the food was delightful and offers you authentic Turkish home cooking. If you aren't so familiar with the roads of Istanbul... More

The Matbah Ottoman Palace was one of the best dining experiences we enjoyed during our stay in Istanbul. This was another venue recommended by our excellent hotel manager, Celel, whose opinion we highly regarded. It was only a short walk from our hotel in Sultanahmet as well. On our arrival we were shown to our table and we were very... More

We tried this on our first night at the Ottoman Hotel. The restaurant was very atmospheric. Apparently the menu was based on menus from the 15th century I gather. The prices were not exorbitant and the menu was in English with a good description of the dish. Whilst the food was well cooked and beautifully presented by friendly courteous staff... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
