Our very picky family of gourmands loved everything about this restaurant! Located in the heart of Istanbul's historic district, adjacent to the Hagia Sophia on a private cobblestone street, we tasted about 15 of their dishes. Each was superb and original. We were referred to this restaurant by our hotel. Very disappointed. Food was not fresh. Stuffed artichoke appetizer seemed like canned vegetables. Meat dishes were too salty to eat. Rice was dry. All of us (4 people) were disappointed. Total was approximately 250tl with no desert, no drinks, no coffee... Wish we had gone with the 2tl corn waiting outside.

One of my favourite restaurants. Forgotten palace recipes bought back to life! Something exotic and special which can't be missed on a visit to istanbul.

We just got back from an excellent meal at Matbah. All the food we ordered was extremely flavorful.....though a tad on the sweeter side. But then, I guess that's what the Sultans like to eat!! While the setting was nice, it wasn't anything exception. The service, however, was most attentive and excellent! Would certainly recommend this place to anyone wanting... More

Chefs researched ottoman dishes historically accurate and recreated them for us to savor. As we visit Istanbul, a city rich in traditions and history, a stop at Matbah completes our experience as we eat like the sultans did. Service is excellent and friendly, in the tradition of the country's great hospitality.

This restaurant has the most interesting menu.True Ottoman cuisine. The food was fantastic. We had 6 different meals and all were excellent. The appetizers were great as well, especially the turnovers. We had children and they were very helpful and accommodating. Good wine list and it's outside so a great place when the weather is nice.

Good food from Ottoman times. The service was ok but there is still a little bit improvement. Place is near Haagia Sophia which is very crowded. In restaurant you can forget that noise while having a lunch in there patio.

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
