Description: Matbah – Ottoman Palace CuisineThe Ottoman Empire has reigned over the huge lands for centuries and coexisted with many nations and cultures. By synthesizing all the acquainted cultures in order to produce a unique taste of its own, through the time, the Ottomans have enriched the Ottoman Cuisine. Several cuisines majorly deriving from Middle Asia, the Balkans, the Middle East and the Europe are the main contributors to the Ottoman Cuisine. This cuisine has prevailed mostly in the kitchens of the Ottoman Palace and therefore, the palace has turned out to be a unique place in order to grasp its tastes completely. Unfortunately, since the guilds of the palace cooks did keep their recipes as professional secrets, this magnificent cuisine has lost some of its unique tastes nowadays. After long and professional researches conducted at the palace libraries, through the books and documents written by palace historians and guild of cooks (who had preferred to share their experiences instead of keeping them as secrets) we, Matbah Restaurant, benefited from all these documents and recipes to prepare a selective and unique menu containing of twenty seven outstanding dishes from Matbah-ı Beray-i (Kitchen of Sultan’s Palace) for your exclusive taste. All dishes served are tested, improved and adapted to the measure which we do use nowadays. Besides, we have noted all the utmost details regarding with the Ottoman-style cooking. After an exquisite exercise and efforts, the stunning recipes have been completed and adjoined to our selective menu. The Ottoman grandeur and hospitality prevailing at “Matbah” is welcoming exclusive guests and gourmets who do delight in the comfort of a vibrant ambiance at different seasons throughout the year. We are more than willing to serve your distinguished agency and special group with the selective menu which we prepared from the stunning recipes.Hope you will enjoy your meal at Matbah.

We found this restaurant via Rick Steve's Istanbul guide The restaurant gives a discount if you show them your Rick Steve's book (ebook form is fine). The staff was very welcoming and helpful, particularly our great waiter, Yusuf. We enjoyed the tie-in to the Sultans' chef's recipe books, for each of the dishes on the menu. Highly recommend.

This restaurant is on a very large terrace and quite formal. The evening we ate there it had suddenly turned chilly so the glass walls were in place and the waiters were offering shawls for anyone feeling the cold; it is still open to the elements. Many of the dishes give a date from when the recipe was first recorded... More

We followed DEngelJ's advice and had a nice meal. The grape leaf appetizer was a cut above the usual grape leaf recipes by using the sour cherries. It was evident that the grape leaves were freshly made and the sour cherries enhanced the dish. We next shared the lamb's neck as advised - not only unusual but also a delicious... More

Our first night in Istanbul and it raised the bar quite high. What the Turks can do with eggplant is remarkable. Efficient and friendly service and quite good value. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for the food. The ambience is not perfect as hotel guests have to trapse through to their rooms, but the food more than makes up for... More

We read the reviews on Trip Advisor and were told by our hotel that this was a great restaurant. I have to agree with everyone. We went to Matbah on our last evening in Istanbul and were not disappointed. Each selection was a treat for the taste buds. The humus was so different than what we get back home. It... More

This is a class restaurant in many ways. The setting with it's amazing glass roof was perfect for our final dinner in Istanbul. We really wished we'd found it earlier. The staff were very friendly and attentive although we did have a delay in between courses for which they did apologise. However the food was well worth waiting for, the... More

Not the only place to use Ottoman archives, but a wonderful roof top ambiance in a central position, with reasonable prices make this a popular place to go. Staff can be erratic, and large groups can interfere with the timing of ones order, but overall a good dining experience with slightly more unusual food.

Great location in the Sultanahmet, with the Blue Mosque and Sofia Hagia only steps away. Food was absolutely amazing! Also really cool to learn that the recipes are taken from Ottoman archives,so you can get a taste of history! To top it off,we found the staff extremely friendly. Great for a romantic meal.

This was the best restaurant we ate at in the Saltan area of Istanbul. It was fun to try recipes the Saltans had eaten over a couple hundred years. The price was reasonable.

The Matbah Restaurant in the Ottoman Hotel Imperial in the Sultanahmet section of Istanbul I should be a national treasure. The owners researched the historic recipes of the Sultan's palace kitchens and have recreated them for modern taste buds. The result is a real treat. Hummus like you've never tasted it before with big chunks of walnuts. Fascinating starters like... More
