Description: Matbah – Ottoman Palace CuisineThe Ottoman Empire has reigned over the huge lands for centuries and coexisted with many nations and cultures. By synthesizing all the acquainted cultures in order to produce a unique taste of its own, through the time, the Ottomans have enriched the Ottoman Cuisine. Several cuisines majorly deriving from Middle Asia, the Balkans, the Middle East and the Europe are the main contributors to the Ottoman Cuisine. This cuisine has prevailed mostly in the kitchens of the Ottoman Palace and therefore, the palace has turned out to be a unique place in order to grasp its tastes completely. Unfortunately, since the guilds of the palace cooks did keep their recipes as professional secrets, this magnificent cuisine has lost some of its unique tastes nowadays. After long and professional researches conducted at the palace libraries, through the books and documents written by palace historians and guild of cooks (who had preferred to share their experiences instead of keeping them as secrets) we, Matbah Restaurant, benefited from all these documents and recipes to prepare a selective and unique menu containing of twenty seven outstanding dishes from Matbah-ı Beray-i (Kitchen of Sultan’s Palace) for your exclusive taste. All dishes served are tested, improved and adapted to the measure which we do use nowadays. Besides, we have noted all the utmost details regarding with the Ottoman-style cooking. After an exquisite exercise and efforts, the stunning recipes have been completed and adjoined to our selective menu. The Ottoman grandeur and hospitality prevailing at “Matbah” is welcoming exclusive guests and gourmets who do delight in the comfort of a vibrant ambiance at different seasons throughout the year. We are more than willing to serve your distinguished agency and special group with the selective menu which we prepared from the stunning recipes.Hope you will enjoy your meal at Matbah.

On a cold rainy night in Istanbul we had trouble finding this place, but so glad we did. It's in a beautiful hotel, the staff is wonderful, and the food was excellent. We were seated next to a heater (good thing, I was freezing!), and started with a warm drink. Then we enjoyed the stuffed melon - the spices were... More

We arrived here after a visit to Sultanahmet Square in Old Town Istanbul. We traveled upstairs and the group of us (44 on a Tauck Tour) were seated at 3 long tables and were promptly served water, iced tea or Cherry juice!! Lunch was served shortly thereafter - the menu was already chosen and the food was never ending and... More

What a great place! Smile, smile and smile...! The menu is great and for everybody. Try the soup, it's amazing! They welcome you with water, a mezze and something to drink. If you don't know what to eat, they will advise you. We even got a small gift before leaving. The best thing in this restaurant is definitely staff members.... More

Great service, excellent food, stunning location. If you want to experience genuine Ottoman cuisine this should not be missed. Not pricey (but definitely not cheap) but excellent value.

The premise of Matbah restaurant is to offer the dishes prepared in the palace kitchens and served to the sultans of the Ottoman empire, faithfully reproduced after extensive research. We thought that this sounded like a really interesting (and very unique) concept, so decided to indulge ourselves with a visit to Matbah. Visually, the decor and atmosphere is excellent. We... More

If the place is not too busy, it is very nice. I wonder how noisy it would be if it was full. Food was delicious, unusual combination of sweet and savoury. Quite expensive.

We stumbled across this restaurant on or way from Topkapi Palace and what a treat!! Silver service in an elegantly laid out with white linen. The menu is creative and extensive. We started with a complimentary shot of pomegranate and what tasted like sherbet drink then ordered the stuffed squid for entree. The squid was beautifully tender and delicately spiced.... More

We came here on January 1, 2015 for lunch. They asked us if we had reservations which we didn't. I'm not sure why they asked me that if by 2:30 pm only 5 tables out of the 15 (or so) were occupied. We were told the day's menu was completely new. So it may be that folks reading this review... More

I experienced Ottoman Cuisine at Matbah Restaurant. Many of the flavour combinations and highlights were not that familiar to me and I have to say I enjoyed it all. Subtle and sometimes challenging but very tasty...stuffed calamari, grilled lamb, and water pudding....and local red wine. Very nice decor, good views, welcoming staff and great service added to the whole experience.... More
