Description: Matbah – Ottoman Palace CuisineThe Ottoman Empire has reigned over the huge lands for centuries and coexisted with many nations and cultures. By synthesizing all the acquainted cultures in order to produce a unique taste of its own, through the time, the Ottomans have enriched the Ottoman Cuisine. Several cuisines majorly deriving from Middle Asia, the Balkans, the Middle East and the Europe are the main contributors to the Ottoman Cuisine. This cuisine has prevailed mostly in the kitchens of the Ottoman Palace and therefore, the palace has turned out to be a unique place in order to grasp its tastes completely. Unfortunately, since the guilds of the palace cooks did keep their recipes as professional secrets, this magnificent cuisine has lost some of its unique tastes nowadays. After long and professional researches conducted at the palace libraries, through the books and documents written by palace historians and guild of cooks (who had preferred to share their experiences instead of keeping them as secrets) we, Matbah Restaurant, benefited from all these documents and recipes to prepare a selective and unique menu containing of twenty seven outstanding dishes from Matbah-ı Beray-i (Kitchen of Sultan’s Palace) for your exclusive taste. All dishes served are tested, improved and adapted to the measure which we do use nowadays. Besides, we have noted all the utmost details regarding with the Ottoman-style cooking. After an exquisite exercise and efforts, the stunning recipes have been completed and adjoined to our selective menu. The Ottoman grandeur and hospitality prevailing at “Matbah” is welcoming exclusive guests and gourmets who do delight in the comfort of a vibrant ambiance at different seasons throughout the year. We are more than willing to serve your distinguished agency and special group with the selective menu which we prepared from the stunning recipes.Hope you will enjoy your meal at Matbah.

Interesting menu based on historic Ottoman recipes. Food was good, surprising at points (as you would hope given the antiquity of some of the recipes). The roast lamb with aubergine was very good. For food, it´s great. Restaurant itself is nice although slightly lackluster, but nevertheless, for the menu, it´s definitely worth trying.

This is the second time we have eaten here and it has now become our favourite restaurant in Istanbul. The meals are imaginatively prepared and presented (we were there last year when the were serving meals enjoyed by Mehmet the Conqueror to commemorate the conquest of Constantinople). The prices are on the higher end but not very expensive for the... More

Food was wonderful but the place lacked atmosphere. It was a bit pretentious for us. Friends recommended it and knowing them we thought it would be expensive. We were pleasant surprised that it was roughly the same price as Faros which was one of the touristy haunts.

My wife and I chose this restaurant on the recommendation of our guide, and we were not disappointed. We ate here the evening after visiting Topkapi Palace and were intrigued by the menu, which features dishes prepared from recipes recovered from the Sultan's palace kitchens. I am not certain how they know the exact recipes from the oldest dishes and... More

Portions were generous and rich enough and The Food !!! Fascinating! The stuffed vine leaves with sour cherries were a delicious starter! Matbah is a fine restaurant in Istanbul, location is great just across of Hagia Sophia, atmosphere is private and perfect to enjoy your meal far from city hustle and bustle. Our tour guide brought us here and told us about the delicious food prepared by traditional recipes, translated from old cookbooks written in Ottoman language. We were with a party... More

Fab location. Sitting in the breeze on the terrace was lovely. Nice menu, interesting concepts. Food was nice but no wow factor. Had the cherry in vine leaves for starters. Was served with sliced gherkins!! A bit strange. Nice but no strong cherry taste. Then had the lamb shank and puréed eggplant. Eggplant was fabulous. Lamb was very tender, but... More

Six of us (three couples) had as near a perfect dining experience as is possible last month (July) at the Matbah. The food was amazing, service impeccable, and the evening was beautiful - we were seated along the balcony, so had an unbroken view of the evening sky. The best dish was the lamb neck stew, by the way -... More

I had made a reservation in advance in garden and was seated and served promptly . Menu was clearly focusing in Turkish cuisine which was excellent I had shoulder of lamb. Location was adjacent to Hag Sophia and I found it when I walked past on way to Topkapi Palace nearby . Service was great as was value .
