Eight years ago we visited Istanbul for the first time and dined on the Sultan's cuisine at Asitane, near the Chora Church on the outskirts of the city. Matbah boasts the same chef but the cuisine was not as delicious. We were not overwhelmed.

We went there for my fathers 60th birthday. While service was attentive, the food was incredibly bland and uninteresting and the setting quite ordinary. We had starters and main courses and were disappointed with all ten dishes. The quirk about the dishes being historical was lost as the history behind the dishes were never presented.

Matbah serves authentic Ottoman Turk food in the elegant, contemporary dining room of the Ottoman Hotel Imperial. The dishes, while unfamiliar, were tasty and well prepared. The service is outstanding. The location, across the road from Hagia Sophia, makes it easy to find. Quiet, because there is no motorized traffic allowed on the road.

Unlike the equally highly reviewed Asitane Restaurant, Matbah Ottoman Palace has the advantage of being centrally located at the heart of the Sultanahmet. The food did not disappoint. Slow roasted meats and fruit came in several courses as we enjoyed delicious Turkish wines. And for dessert, a walk by the illuminated Hagia Sophia before falling into bed.

Ambiance and service is superb. The staff surprised us with complimentary small portion of fresh pomegranate juice and small portion of appetizer that we didn't order. The food is very good. Next to Hagia Sophia yet on a quiet street.

Service and location are fantastic. Nice views too. The waiters brought us lots of little free bits to taste which were all delicious but the main courses we ordered were very average. I expected a bit more after all the glowing recommendations.

We visited the Matbah on our first evening. We were impressed by the excellent service and the view was nice. However, as a first impression of Turkish cuisine and the hype our hotel gave this place, we had hoped for something more flavoursome - it felt a little like Turkish food made for tourists. Would recommend for a light lunch... More

This is unlike any of the other restaurants we visited during our stay in Istanbul. We found mention of it in the Lonely Planet guide and were very glad we followed it up. The food was simply delicious. Yes it was a bit more expensive than your run of the mill Istanbul restaurants but it was worth every penny and... More
