Cafe Mitra - popular with locals, expatriates and tourists - specializes in modern Nepali and Chinese food along with European dishes. We have a full bar with cocktails, wines, fine liquor and beverages. We also have 4 rooms tucked away in a quiet landscaped garden in the middle of the vibrant madness of Thamel. They are clean, quiet and comfortable with en suite bathroom and plenty of hot & cold water. At the moment we are working at adding 4 more rooms, hopefully by April 2015. At first glance, Thamel appears to be overwhelmingly chaotic. It is, no doubt. However, the fact is this compact heart of Kathmandu has all the amenities to ensure that visitors are never far from services they require, such as travel and trekking agencies; supermarkets, just in case you forgot to bring your toothbrush; pharmacies for your anti-allergy pills; and international or locally-made outdoor wear! It is easy to get your money out safely from several ATMs; hunt for souvenirs; and send them home via air cargo. Thamel is also conveniently located, allowing easy access - even on foot - to important historical, cultural and religious highlights that Kathmandu has to offer such as Kathmandu Durbar Square where the Royal Kumari, the Living Goddess, resides; Monkey Temple aka Swoyambhunath; Garden of Dreams; Royal Palace Museum, etc. All these places are walks of 10 to 30 minutes from us. And if you want to take it easy - after all you are on a holiday! - Taxis and rickshaws are plentiful. Just get your bargaining chops fine-tuned to perfection! So, buy your ticket, hop into an aeroplane, or a bus, and allow us to introduce you to Nepal and its unique hospitality and charms! It is our sincere hope you will enjoy having a meal with us AND also staying with us. Kunal Lama - Owner

We ate here two times during our nights around Thamel. It was quiet with good service and the Goat Cheese main was sublime. The menu is smallish, western with Nepali influences but there was always something for everyone. Service was efficient and food was fresh which is why we ate here two times. Enjoy!

Found this place by accident, but was very pleasantly surprised, not typical Nepalese food, but very well cooked and presented food. located off one of the main streets, the garden offers a dust free zone and lower noise levels, the top terrace offers fine views of a hidden Stupa. They also have rooms available for rent. The staff were helpful... More

Well done Kunal! Keeping up the standards of fine dining. Tucked inside the middle of Thamel with nice tables and beautifully chosen and well-kept plants decorating the courtyard. Delicious food: vegetarian and the best steak to be found in Nepal!

I go to Cafe Mitra occasionally for the food. It is expensive, but worth it entirely. The ambiance and service is nice, not amazing, but the food is superb. I am yet to be disappointed.

Cafe Mitra is in Thamel, and though small, is brilliant in its cooking department. That's not surprising as the owner, Kunal, is a terrific chef and has taught his kitchen staff to excel. Whenever my husband and I visit Kathmandu, which is at least twice a year, we make it a point to go to Cafe Mitra. My husband always... More

I stayed here in April for 4 nights. Initially it was only for 2 nights however I felt so secure and content I decided not to risk changing accommodation and was glad I did. Staff were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, always more than happy to help whether it be for a chat or to book a car or a restaurant.... More

Mitra cafe tucked away in one of the many corners of Thamel has excellent food! The set up is cosy and quite lovely, with hints of red, white, green and blue here and there. The snapper by far was my favorite dish from the steak and minced pork we ordered but I have to say it took forever for our... More
