Senegalese Sophistication: Food, Music, Art & Ambiance

We loved this restaurant's funky charm and amazing collection of African art, returning twice for the excellent live music and good mix of Senegalese, French and continental dishes. Drinks are good here, too, and they have an outdoor patio, too.

Calebasse is located in one of the touristic Dakar areas and consequently caters for a mix of locals and tourists (mostly). The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of an old impressive house which allows the wind to cool down during the evenings, which is welcome to me. The fried squid was very well prepared. This evening, a Wednesday, the... More

This place definitely has the best "poulet braisé" or other wise known as "flavored grilled chicken". I would recommend it with a side order of fried plantain to top it off! It's extremely delicious. The vibe of the place also features various artwork from different places in Africa. You will see various colors surrounding the room as well as different... More

The restaurant springs a surprise by offering an authentic experience of the local cuisine. It certainly is the best upmarket restaurant for authentic Senegalese cuisine in Dakar. We had shrimp with fresh mango. We also tried the local preparation of chicken. The former was much better prepared than the latter. The restaurant is situated on the second floor of the... More

this is not one of my go-to restaurants in dakar - but every time i do go am reminded how much i enjoy. decor might be borderline kitsch - but as you start to roam the halls and stairwells you realize great collection of masks etc for sale. food is good - always love the crevettes au miel et sesame.... Pros: Live Music often entertaining. Food is quite delicious. Waiters are nice and smiling. Decor is beautiful, carved in wood fournitures with roof like a village hut. Cons: Slow service, food takes quite some time to be served. Mosquitos, DO make sure you use their mosquito repellent. When people smoke inside it's suffocating if you sit close to them.

We had the whole crispy Thiof fish and it was absolutely amazing. It seriously had the best spices we tasted in Africa. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxing. Our waitress did not speak a word of English but fortunately there was an employee nearby that spoke a little. it made the experience that much better. its funny when we walked... More

I spent a very enjoyable Saturday evening at La Calebasse. There was a wide range of local food on the menu, with some very tasty seafood, and the waiting staff were very pleasant. The best thing about the restaurant was the atmosphere. There was local art on display and a live music act - for most of the evening this... More

Had a lovely meal on the night before I left Dakar with my colleagues at this resturant and it was a pleasant experience. The food was very nice as I ate a well spiced whole fish which was real delicious. The service was fair and enjoyed the lovely pieces of art on display in the resturant. You even get to... More

If you're a tourist, swing by. The combination of art, music and food makes it worthwhile. I'm in Dakar for a while and don't plan to go back. I know better places to procure art and food...
