A nice place for pastry & coffee

My wife & I stopped by for a late bite, not wanting anything but a Danish & coffee. We were pleasantly surprised to see the variety of pastries, including muffins, danish, bear claws, donuts and the like. We both ordered apple fitters, which were great. Fresh and tasty. Just like I have always... read more

This little restaurant/bakery is just off Duff Avenue by the railroad tracks. Choose from a variety of soups and sandwiches. All are homemade and delicious. Dinner salads are also available and of course many, many delicious bakery items. Take out is very common, but there are several tables if you want to eat in. Prices are very reasonable. I had... Great breakfast sandwich & pastries. We will be back. The service was fast and pleasant. Try the breakfast croissant.

I must admit, I'm a big fan of anything that contains almond paste. We have gone out of our way to make sure we can stop by Pella to pick up a few. But then we recently learned that we could find them much closer to home. They are every bit as good as those we've bought from Pella. Every... More

I don't actually sit down and eat here but I am very glad that Ames has The Dutch Oven. The Dutch Letters and the almond tarts go great with coffee, and I like to tell myself that the almonds make for a high protein breakfast! To be truthful, I;d have to say that Hy Vee makes better doughnuts. But nobody... More

Okay maybe a slight exaggeration; however, I oftentimes drive approximately 100 miles round trip just to go to Dutch Oven Bakery ("DOB") to snatch up their apple fritters. They are very reasonable from a price perspective (.95 as of 11/25/2013) and the taste is incredible. The fritter itself is extremely soft and includes small apples in the center. If you... More

My son and I picked up breakfast for his family here yesterday and came home with a little bit more than we initially went for. We went for their croissant breakfast sandwiches ...served with ham (or bacon) egg and cheese; we came back with some donuts, a Danish and some peanut butter cookies :). Great prices ...great, hot, tasty breakfast... More

The Dutch Oven makes nice Dutch Letters in the shape of an S. They have inexpensive lunches. But it is disappointing to find out that they use a margarine like substance in their baking instead of butter and also serve some mystery spread with their bread. If they would use more authentic ingredients it could be quite good. Highlight: the... More

I've only been to the Ames location once, but my wife and I frequent the Boone location. They always have great service and delicious donuts/pastries/cake/treats/etc. The Boone location is where they actually bake everything (I believe the Ames location just gets deliveries in from the Boone location). The Bird's Eye donut is the best!

Our favorite bakery in town. From donuts, to tarts, turnovers etc. this is the place. We had a large cake made for a birthday and it was decorated perfectly. Very tasty too!
