I must admit, I'm a big fan of anything that contains almond paste. We have gone out of our way to make sure we can stop by Pella to pick up a few. But then we recently learned that we could find them much closer to home. They are every bit as good as those we've bought from Pella. Every... More

I don't actually sit down and eat here but I am very glad that Ames has The Dutch Oven. The Dutch Letters and the almond tarts go great with coffee, and I like to tell myself that the almonds make for a high protein breakfast! To be truthful, I;d have to say that Hy Vee makes better doughnuts. But nobody... More

Okay maybe a slight exaggeration; however, I oftentimes drive approximately 100 miles round trip just to go to Dutch Oven Bakery ("DOB") to snatch up their apple fritters. They are very reasonable from a price perspective (.95 as of 11/25/2013) and the taste is incredible. The fritter itself is extremely soft and includes small apples in the center. If you... More

My son and I picked up breakfast for his family here yesterday and came home with a little bit more than we initially went for. We went for their croissant breakfast sandwiches ...served with ham (or bacon) egg and cheese; we came back with some donuts, a Danish and some peanut butter cookies :). Great prices ...great, hot, tasty breakfast... More

The Dutch Oven makes nice Dutch Letters in the shape of an S. They have inexpensive lunches. But it is disappointing to find out that they use a margarine like substance in their baking instead of butter and also serve some mystery spread with their bread. If they would use more authentic ingredients it could be quite good. Highlight: the... More

I've only been to the Ames location once, but my wife and I frequent the Boone location. They always have great service and delicious donuts/pastries/cake/treats/etc. The Boone location is where they actually bake everything (I believe the Ames location just gets deliveries in from the Boone location). The Bird's Eye donut is the best!

Our favorite bakery in town. From donuts, to tarts, turnovers etc. this is the place. We had a large cake made for a birthday and it was decorated perfectly. Very tasty too!

This place makes some out-of-the-ordinary stuff and they do a solid job with everything. I've been there about a half-dozen times now. While nothing has knocked my socks off, I've never been disappointed either.

Great bakery, with a lot of tasty, rich, fattening good stuff! I have never had anything in there that was anything but delicious. They even serve a good tea room type lunch menu! Great tasting soups and sandwiches, and then you can have dessert!

This is a good place to get soup and salad and sandwich type lunch food. I believe they also have breakfast but am not sure. Not exceptional but good service and pretty fast, cozy atmosphere, Good choice of sandwiches and home made soup. Comes with cookie.
