For a late lunch, I ordered one of the "Original Specials" dating from the 1930s--sausage & peppers. When it arrived I could hardly believe my eyes -- two large, WHOLE bell peppers standing up, plus three long, whole, spicier peppers, plus a generous helping of Italian sausage and a separate plate of shells with a tasty (although a bit watery)... We recently had our rehearsal dinner at the First and Last Tavern with a group of 25 people. I had previously spoken with the manager and we had decided on pizza, salad, appetizer and dessert with pitchers of beer and wine to be served with dinner. The food was good, however, for 25 people, we only received one plate of... More

My cousin and I meet every couple months here for a long visit. We go at lunchtime. Servers are attentive but let us have our 'space'. We always split an antipasto and then have soup, a side of meatballs or a sandwich. I often get a bowl of soup and am never disappointed. Today I had cream of mushroom --... More

The reason for an average letter grade is because it is an average restaurant. Yes, the alfresco dining was pleasant. The menu is the tried and traditional dishes that make up the offerings of "Italian style" restaurants. The pasta in the Carbonara was cooked beyond the "aldente" stage and the sauce was heavily laden with what tasted like a cream... More

It can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but there is overflow parking within easy walking distance. It is a pizza place, with good pizza. I enjoy their burgers, which they offer without buns for those of us on diets. This is a rare pizza place who can actually cook a medium rare burger (you have no idea how... More

Service was quick and friendly, and the food was great. Great selection of Italian inspired cuisine. Great pizzas available in a few different sizes. I ordered the sweet pea pizza topped with peas; it was great. Pasta is homemade and fresh. Decent and reasonably priced wine and drink list.

Had two meals at the First and Last and both were scrumptious. This place is quaint but spacious with ample room for diners. The salads were exceptional and the wedge salad was amazing and satisfying. It looked like a huge baked Alaska and delicious. The brick oven pizza is amazing. Cooked perfectly and not charred as many of these are... More

If you are looking for a typical Italian-ish America dinner than head to the first and last. It really isn't terrible food, just terribly predictable. James and I went on a Saturday night and had the quickest meal I have ever had in my life. Why? Mainly because we showed up at 8:15 and they would closing (lights off, everyone... More

The First and Last, while not bearing a classic Italian name, is as close to Italy as you can get in Avon or the surrounding area. The name comes from it's original location which was the last restaurant you passed when leaving Hartford and, therefore, the first one you saw coming into the city. The pasta is homemade as are...
