It was a good thing we made reservations for our party of 9, they where busy that night. The waitress was a little overwhelmed but she was very pleasant and nice. Everyone was happy with their food. I read a few reviews about the dark atmosphere, it was much better. It was well lit and very comfortable.

Don't let the outside deter you. OLD roadhouse decor all John Wayne related Good reasonable home type food. Wait help a little harried our stop as think they had more business than anticipated. Alcohal and wine available. Easy access and parking

The steaks were cooked just right and tender. Baked potato just right. Salad good. Prices very reasonable for a steakhouse. Waitress was a student, and bright and attentive.

We stayed overnight in Alamosa and were told True Grits was pretty good. We were there for lunch and WOW was it ever good. We were one of two couples there (a weekday) and everything was wonderful...especially the homemade bread. We enjoyed the JW pictures and carving likeness. We liked the very primitive, rustic type atmosphere. Waitress was very friendly... More

I was traveling on business with a colleague, arriving on Sunday night for a Monday meeting in Alamosa. It was 8:00 p.m. The outside of this restaurant has never impressed us, but we were interested in having steak, and had a recommendation from the hotel clerk for True Grits. Upon entering the dining room, the darkness is remarkable; are they... More

We were visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Zapata Falls and drove to Alamosa to find something to eat. The name of the restaurant caught my attention being a John Wayne fan. The building isn't much to look at and the interior was clean but drab despite the JW movie posters but we decided to take a chance.... More

If you want some great prime rib this is the place. It was cooked to perfection & I chose the baked potato which was also great. The salad was also great with fresh mushrooms and carrots, it came with homemade bread which was also good. The building is old but I don't mind rustic the only downfall was the service... More

True Grits doesn't look very inviting on the outside as you drive by, but once you stop and have a delicious meal with a Western flair, you will return every time you are in Alamosa. It was first recommended to us by a hotel staff member. The John Wayne theme is fun and the atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. Our... More

The John Wayne decor is interesting. The staff was attentive and service prompt. Skip the house gin, terrible. The prime rib was properly cooked and the house made safflower bread yummy.

This is a great steak and seafood restaurant, a bit pricey, but huge, delicious servings. Efficient service, great food, and convenient to Alamosa.!
