nice small plates; crowded venue

Fonda has been a fine visit along the extraordinarily crowded Solano Avenue (Berkeley-Albany) strip for a long time. The drinks are acceptable, the food what you might expect, and the pleasures of a visit mostly a matter of what friends you bring with you. Parking can be an adventure, or at least a... read more

Really wanted to like this place. The duck tacos were dry and the chicken wings were spicy with no flavor. Went for taco Tuesday and left hungry. The sangria was pretty good.

Went to Fonda on Solano on Friday for happy hour. Was really impressed with our attentive and friendly waitress who did her best to give us a good experience. The food, we had fish tacos, tuna tartar, scallops, shrimps and some salad, tasted great but could have had a better presentation. Will be back for more.

Four stars, not five, because last time the young bartender was displeased and argumentative when we, two old ladies, one us disabled and having made it there from the car with some difficulty, arrived five minutes before the official opening time, came in the open door, and insisted on sitting down to wait. Sorry, age and tenacity win out over... More

The oysters were really fresh! (This is coming from somebody who gets her oysters direct from Taylor Shellfish) Also, don't miss the tuna tartare and the grilled skirt steak. Maybe a little pricey for some but I do not mind paying for good food especially fresh seafood:)

Usually fairly crowded and a fun atmosphere. The food (mostly tapa or small-plate style) is very good. However, it's easy to run up a big tab if you are hungry. Good place for a drink and a snack. For dinner, bring plenty of money.

We have eaten at Fonda's many times. The food is both traditional and innovative Mexican and is very good. The bar is full and they have many signature cocktails, wine and beer. The alcoholic dessert drinks are especially good. The only thing is the food is expensive and the portions are small. We usually have eaten dinner earlier and go... More

I've been to Fonda's many times, and have never been disappointed. I love it that we can go there after most other local restaurants are closed, and get absolutely wonderful food. When I've asked to be seated in a quieter area, they always accommodate us. The drinks are a bit pricy, but the food itself is well-priced. The tacos are... More

Excellent cocktail, best bartenders in the East Bay, very good Latin American dishes. Sometimes the food is a bit pricey, but always a good time.

great location, great neighborhood feel, service has been friendlier, house margarita used to have better tequila and always used cointreau, now you have to pay for those benefits
