Historic Political Meeting Place

This restaurant is historic in that many politicians have wheeled and dealed there. We sat at a booth that said that Lyndon Johnston and Sam Rayburn often sat there. Great ambiance, friendly service but very disappointed with an easy meal, sheppards pie.... I went alone and sat at the bar.

The atmosphere is quaint and romantic and the nostalgia makes for a nice restaurant to visit. I expected a little more out of the food and the wait staff were pushy towards ordering over priced meals. We sat next to the Proposal booth and that was cool, we were tourist, so we took a picture. The quality of the food... More

Thank you fellow travelers, for recommendations here. Not only was the food excellent (loved the Shrimp and Grits) but the service was top notch. We were lucky enough to score a table outside where the 40's music was the perfect complement to an already great experience.

Excellent grilled meat and fish. Good service and really nice small terrace. It sure has the characteristic to be an institution in DC

Our visit started with the amazing food, followed exceptional service and rounded out by the cool history of the historic patrons made our visit memorable. Will go again when in D.C.

I love Martin's Tavern. It was opened in the early 1930's. JFK proposed to Jackie in one of its booths. The food is very good. The location is great if you are wandering around Georgetown and want a place to sit and eat and perhaps have a drink. The prices are reasonable (on the high side--but JFK proposed in this... More

My son lives a block south of M, so we always eat on M. Tonight we went "off the beaten path" & tried Martins. The food was excellent and the service was well paced - some might say slow, but we did not feel rushed like we did in some other local restaurants. The extensive menu offered something for everyon... More

We chose this restaurant partly because of the JFK proposal story and the presidents having eaten there - it also seemed to have a cool "old fashioned" feel to it. The service was good and the atmosphere enjoyable but the food was mixed - my pot roast was excellent but my partner's fish (the Shad which is only available for... More

This is the classical, old-school DC establishment with lots of history. We sat next to the booth were JFK supposedly asked Jackie to marry him so many years ago. Don't expect lots of space or a quiet environment. This place is packed and tables are very close. We found the service to be a tad on the slow side, although... More
