Very Enjoyable Dining

Sort of agree with most of what all the recent folk have said. As Fannie R really says, not at all trendy French 'nouvelle cuisine' - but then again you might have a bit of nostalgia for the older French cooking. (However, her complaint about the one egg omelette for "FIVE" dollars...Hello! This is Washington DC! Georgetown!! I would have... More

Authentic French cooking is distinguished by smaller portions, elegantly prepared, lightly seasoned and, most of all, memorable. Quite to the contrary, La Chaumiere's dishes, ladled with mashed potatoes, are heavy, rich, and enormous portions. The restaurant can no longer honestly claim to be a "classic" French restaurant. It's become Americanized French. The room remains nice and cozy even though tables... More

I'm French... and La Chaumière is not the better image of France in DC. We arrived with a nice baby in a stroller... they glanced at us and responded they have no baby high-chair (first time it happens in the US). After that, they offered us to cook an omelette for my daughter with ONE egg and they charged FIVE... More

A true culinary gem, La Chaumiere, is a must do if you are a foodie. The setting makes you feel like attending at least once a season, spring, summer, fall & winter, just to experience the unique happiness that comes from an absolutely delicious meal. There is something on the menu for everyone and an intimate feeling that comes when... More

It is good to find items on the menu unchanged for decades that are not generally available elsewhere and the preparation is straight forward classic French, without bowing to changing fads. The bad is that nothing was prepared particularly well. The onion soup, while endowed with a generous cap of cheese, covered a weak and wimpy broth. The cassoulet was... More

We went with friends who have been here before. It was a frigid February night and we were thrilled when we were seated next to the beautiful fireplace. The food was "out of this world", the service perfect and the ambiance just like a little restaurant in France. It was expensive but well worth it!

La Chaumiere made us believe in eating out for Valentine's Day again. Our last several years have disappointed because the restaurants jam in extra tables, overbook, rush you and generally give you the worst service of the year so that they can flip tables. We didn't feel that at all at Chaumiere. We booked months ago hoping for the experience... More

We've been dining here for years. Staff is fantastic, particularly waitress Marie Renne. Wine tips married to both food and our preferences have always been spot on. Chef is known for his expertise with sweetbreads and they have never disappointed.

Honest well prepared classic French home cooking that often rises to culinary art -- cozy and friendly - at prices that are fair
