If this were in Europe in would have a Michelin star. The food was beautifully prepared, the service impeccable and the surroundings a delight. The crockery was also Limoges which is a nice touch. I had a rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection. Wine is pricey – twice what we paid for the same wine at a different... More

Definitely a "special occasion" place - we celebrated our 5-year anniversary here. Service is impeccable! They knew it was our anniversary and printed "Happy 5-year anniversary" on our menus, and gave them to us to take home. How cool is that??? Food was very good - not the best I've ever had, but tasty - I really enjoyed the fact... More

A recent business dinner at the 1789 did not disappoint. The menu changes, but the choices wrer as varied as I have ever seen with many fresh fish entrees, a return of lamb to the menu and excellent beef. Pasta can be had as an appetizer or starter, and food is only surpassed by the beatuful rooms in the cozy... More

Washington DC has many excellent restaurants, and 1789 happens to be one of our favorites. We've eaten there several times and have never had a bad experience. From start to finish, everything was as usual top notch. 1789 comprises a main dining room and other smaller rooms upstairs if you like more privacy, so you may want to specify when... More

My 81 year old mother and I dined here while visiting Washington. This is our kind of place! Our hotel accidentally made our reservation for the previous evening and the maitre d' was very gracious to prepare a table for us. We both ordered the lamb chops and they were excellent! The serving staff was very attentive.

The place has allot of atmosphere . Very dark with small rooms. The staff make overtures of being very attentive. However, when a larger group sat next to us all the weels fell off and we wound up waiting 30 minutes for a bowl of icecream for my son. They did offer not to charge us for the dessert, however... Took my wife here for a special dinner to celebrate my masters at Georgetown university. Food and service were excellent, as was the wine list and we were treated to table #37, the same nw Bill and Hillary always eat at.

My best friend received a Birthday gift card from her son to enjoy a night out at a fine restaurant. Although near Georgetown University it was not overrun with college kids and their parents. We were fortunate to be seated in the "Tap room", an unexpectedly quiet room near the bar. The waiters and staff couldn't have been more pleasant... More

We had a very enjoyable evening at 1789. On the way the Cab driver told us its the oldest restaurant in DC and a favourite of past presidents. We therefore had high expectations and we were certainly not disappointed. The food was fresh and delicious. The wine was nice and the service excellent. Like many restaurants in DC it closes...
