Fabulous Experience!

Once again, 1789 was a great dining experience! My husband took me to celebrate my birthday. We were seated in the John Carroll Room with a fire blazing. It was so cozy and intimate. 1789 is one of our favorite restaurants of all time in the DC area. We have lived here over 30 years so that's high praise. Be sure when you make a reservation to ask for a table in the John Carroll room too. It is so comfortable and elegantly charming. For the first course we all tried the bucatelli carbonara... More

Just celebrated a friend's birthday at 1789 earlier today and it just so happens that it is a participating establishment in DC's restaurant week. We had rather a large party (8 persons total) and we all decided to try the prix fixe menu. The food was absolutely delicious! If going for restaurant week, I highly recommend the carbonara, the short... More

My family had our Thanksgiving dinner here and it was positively wonderful! From the moment we arrived it was so pleasant. They valet parked our car.We had a drink at the bar(which is very small) and had an enjoyable chat with the bartender. The dining room where we ate our meal was beautiful. The food was very good. The staff were amazing.... More

The food here was amazing and each course seemed to get better (although it seemed impossible to top it at the beginning!) I'd recommend this restaurant to somebody who appreciates fine dining in a heartbeat. The outside looks a little run down, but once you're inside it's a very intimate setting and each room has a theme. We requested the... More

The place has natural historic charm with multiple levels of dining reminding one of european dining experiences. Dining rooms have fireplaces and appropriate lighting, art, and table settings. The staff is very attentive and multiples of servers appear to table your food at the same time as other members in your party. Menu offered a nice variety of wild game... More

Nod to the past .. charming upstairs dining room (after a horrible entry through ugly stairwell...). Service trying hard, but needs some sophistication (and basic training on how to serve w/o reaching across table adn plates..). Holiday week visit w/ carolers 'entertaining' throughout meal (probably not an enhancement to experience..). Food ranged between poor & very nice. 1st floor bar/dining... More

We were looking for a place to celebrate a birthday and this was our choice. We made advanced reservations and told them it was an occasion. They printed a special menu with the birthday person's name on it and we got to keep it. We also got a birthday card from the staff and a visit from the manager. They... More
