Intimate and old fashion

The food was excellent but pricey. Expect to spend at least $100 per person which does not include a drink since we do not drink. Also jacket is suggested but my son and I were in T-shirt and were turned away. Interior is a bit dark but intimate. Also expect to order at least three course. We... read more

We were in town for family visit & went here for fine dinning. It is quiet, romantic, wonderful food & service. Took advantage of summer price special $48.00, great value. Most men had jackets on, some ties as well.

My wife and I came here for her birthday and we couldn't have picked a better place. We absolutely loved the intimate ambience of the restaurant and the service was superb. They have a summer special of 3 courses for $48 until September 11 excluding Saturdays. We took advantage this deal and we found it to be a great value.... More

This is a classical place that will stand the test of time. Excellent food and great service. Parking is chore but it's DC what can you say.

We were in the Georgetown area and wanted dinner before heading back to the Capitol. Saw the glowing reviews and decided to make a pit stop. This is a very old school restaurant where one would feel a bit out of place if you are not dressed up for dinner. That being said, we were not turned away for looking... More

This is a fine dining experience. That isn't a question. I'm not certain that it is a jacket-required place, but you wouldn't feel comfortable as a man without a jacket on. Expect to have at least 3 courses. Enjoy the americana decor, it's quintessential east coast colonial style dining. We had a simple date night on a Friday night (reservations... More

Lovely old building with several themed rooms. We had the bar room. Suggest you ask for the room with fireplace or garden room with windows. Established in 1962 with interesting art chosen by owner, named 1789 from year George Washington university established. All Presidents since then have dined there(except GWBush) ..staff friendly and helpful- proud of the history. Food excellent... More

The first and only mistake we made was walking to 1789 from Georgetown. It looked easy on the map, but the streetmap didn't take elevation into account. We had quite a climb up an almost vertical staircase. A cab would have been a much better bet. As we walked in to claim our reservation a family followed us in typical... More

Great restaurant with old world atmosphere. We enjoyed our time there immensely. The service is a positive contrast to other restaurants in the area. And the food is superb. Make sure you are in the main dining room.

I'm a Georgetown University alumnus that brought my girlfriend here -- a first time for both of us. Unimpressed. We each ordered a first course, an entree, one dessert, and a bottle of wine. The overall experience was unfortunately average -- particularly in the area of value and food. I don't mind paying up for a great restaurant experience (and... More
