All except a few dishes were oversalted -- even the bread -- and several either overcooked or undercooked. We only had fish and vegetarian, so perhaps the meat is better, but we saw that someone at the next table sent his lamb back after a few bites, so perhaps not.Servers were attentive, but often seemed unprofessional for a restaurant of... I had not been to 1789 for decades. I went again during Restaurant Week and found the cuisine better than ever. I had a wonderful cod preparation with mushrooms, a prawn appetizer and a chocolate torte for dessert. The food was well above average, and our French server knew exactly when to appear and how not to hover in an... More

Conventional wisdom in the Washington DC area holds that the great restaurants are destinations in the Maryland and Virginia countryside. Although there certainly are good places to visit out of town, you can dine well without every leaving the city. Restaurant 1789 hits all the right notes. Recently my wife and another couple and I dined at 1789. Start with... More

We had been sightseeing all day and we really wanted to try this old school spot. When we arrived we knew we were grossly underdressed and hate it when tourist come to our local favorite place underdressed but our hotel was across town and there was no way we were going to go back to change. Much to our surprise... More

Excellent restaurant. We were part of a group celebrating a Graduation, so we did not pay for the meal. But the food quality was excellent, especially considering that they served around 40 people. Most of us had the Hanger steak, which was excellent and nicely Medium rare ( on the rarer side). We were seated in a private room upstairs,... More

The food was excellent but pricey. Expect to spend at least $100 per person which does not include a drink since we do not drink. Also jacket is suggested but my son and I were in T-shirt and were turned away. Interior is a bit dark but intimate. Also expect to order at least three course. We ordered Chilled Corn... More

We were in town for family visit & went here for fine dinning. It is quiet, romantic, wonderful food & service. Took advantage of summer price special $48.00, great value. Most men had jackets on, some ties as well.

My wife and I came here for her birthday and we couldn't have picked a better place. We absolutely loved the intimate ambience of the restaurant and the service was superb. They have a summer special of 3 courses for $48 until September 11 excluding Saturdays. We took advantage this deal and we found it to be a great value.... More
