Excellent service and food

Don't let the exterior fool you. The atmosphere is very laid back, but the food quality is high. You will not leave hungry.

I am West African, and its hard to find a local restaurant that serves good African food. I stumbled upon this place while browsing the net. I had the tomato stew with spinach and beef w/ jollof rice.....so bomb! My friend had the peanut stew...which was also tasty. Since then I have suggested to other friends who have visited the... Wanted a different type of cuisine while in DC so went to Sumah's. TA descriptions were accurate - don't think I'd have gone in had I not read the reviews. We had never had this type of food before, so they brought us a sampler with all of the 7 sauces so we could try and figure out what to... More

As a Peace Corps volunteer and later as Peace Corps staff I lived in Liberia and traveled throughout West Africa and enjoyed the numerous savory meat and greens stews. While the Washinton DC region has many Ethiopia restaurants, very few places serve the distinctly different West African cuisine. Mr. Sumah is a wonderful, gregarious host and started us off with... I served in West Africa in the Peace Corps and really miss the food. Every time I visit my Peace Corps buddy in DC we go to a new West African restaurant. This one had the best combination of food and hospitality by far. Sumah gave us a sample platter of sauces so we could choose our favorites. At the... More

Great mix of sauces with either fufu or rice. You can get two sauces if you can't decide between all the delicious options. Kind of expensive for what it is, but I'm sure their rent is going up and some of the ingredients might be hard to get. I love it, am annoyed with myself that it took me so... More

Hands down the best West African food I've had in a long time, probably in forever. Once you get past the decor, you will be in foodie heaven in no time. The costumer service is excellent. Everyone was so friendly. The food.... My goodness. The best way to describe it is gourmet home cooking! My taste buds were doing the... More

Having lived in Ghana, West Africa as kids, on a recent trip to DC I met up with my two sisters and our kids, to give them an authentic experience (we eat GroundNut Soup at home frequently). With the owner from Sierra Leone, the food was a bit different than what we were used to. I thought the prices were... More

My first time having Sierre Leone food and I must say the food and service was remarkable. The owner allowed me to sample to help me make a decision on my order. I ordered the vegeterian option with fish. The portion can feed 3/4 people. I had left overs, but after the 2nd day I trashed it :( The location... More

My wife and I were both on Ghana before we were married. Recently we had a couple of friends visit that were also in Ghana previously. We wanted to find a place that served African food, and had a good "African Experience." When we ate here, we were very pleased and left happy with our itch for a taste of... More
