I worked in Sierra Leone for over two years and after I left I never thought I could find really a place that served the great West African food that I loved so much. I saw Sumah's featured on CNN's Focus on Africa and being in town for business, I had to check it out. OMG!!!!!! If I closed my... More

Came for dinner. Very good food. Large portions. Friendly people and great service. Don't let the appearance of the restaurant fool you. It took a while to get the food but it was worth the wait. Free sampler plate was a great idea since this was the first time I've tried west African food.

Best surprise of DC, a taste of the citie's diversity. The sauces are a explosion of flavor, completly diferent of everything I've experientes before. If you are adventurous and like new experiences, that's your place in DC!

After living in Ghana a couple years ago, I had been begging to find a West African restaurant. On a trip to D.C. I found this place and decided to check it out. First off, it's less than a block away from the Shaw-Howard U Metro stop on the Yellow Line, making it easy to find. Upon arrival we were... More

The restaurant is an excellent place to enjoy west African food. The establishment is a short walk from the Metro. You are greeted with a smile. Even though we had African food before, the owner brought out a sample platter. I chose the cassava and peanut butter sauce. Delicious! It was a very filling meal. The owner brought out large... Don't let the exterior fool you. The atmosphere is very laid back, but the food quality is high. You will not leave hungry.

I am West African, and its hard to find a local restaurant that serves good African food. I stumbled upon this place while browsing the net. I had the tomato stew with spinach and beef w/ jollof rice.....so bomb! My friend had the peanut stew...which was also tasty. Since then I have suggested to other friends who have visited the... Wanted a different type of cuisine while in DC so went to Sumah's. TA descriptions were accurate - don't think I'd have gone in had I not read the reviews. We had never had this type of food before, so they brought us a sampler with all of the 7 sauces so we could try and figure out what to... More

As a Peace Corps volunteer and later as Peace Corps staff I lived in Liberia and traveled throughout West Africa and enjoyed the numerous savory meat and greens stews. While the Washinton DC region has many Ethiopia restaurants, very few places serve the distinctly different West African cuisine. Mr. Sumah is a wonderful, gregarious host and started us off with...
