"Ala" in Latvian meens "cave". Restaurant is in authentic old basement. Very nice ant interesting, tradicional Latvian interior. Portions are huge! Very very very tasty. And prices good to. One of the cheapest places to eat in Old Riga. "Latvian meat balls" and "Dundagas royal stroganoff" was perfect cooked. And you have to try "Madonas" beer.

I went twice during a weekend trip! Great atmosphere, lots of people snd nice music. The beer selection is great, the portions are huge and staff is friendly. Service was a tad slow, but the place was packed so they're excused. I'll come back next time I visit Riga as well!

"Restaurants are to fill your stomach..." Well, not in this restaurant. Oh, your stomach will be filled all right, don't get me wrong, but in an atmosphere that is just astonishing!!! An old basement, maybe an old wine cellar (?), I don't know, but it's just a wonderful environment with background music that matches it. I just loved it! Never... More

Came here on first night of a 3 night stay in Riga. First off, the location on the TA map is way off - this place is actually to the south of the town hall and St Peter's Church. Thankfully, Riga is not massive so found it eventually. Prices are very reasonable and for this, the place is very good... More

Great food, big various menu, good choice of beer (cranbury, for example) and a very cozy atmosphere. Mainly young people around the tables. Concerts of the local musicans add a traditional touch. Surprisingly cheap was it as well comparing to other places in Old City.

I as a latvian living abroad was looking forward to visiting folkclub Ala. Unfortunately my expectation were not met and I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong- beer and food selection is good, but once you look for some specifics your experience can be a bit different. For example, I am allergic to gluten. That is usually fine,... More

Great food, atmosphere and value. Service is friendly. Can be a bit slow but who cares?! Lots of choices for local beers and snacks to go with them. Main courses generous and very good.

Good atmosphere, low prices, tasty food. A place where the locals hang out, and you really get the Latvian feeling. Delicous garlic bread but don`t take it as a starter for one person; it`s more than enough for 3 persons!! The waiter should have warned us; we ordered 7 plates and ate 3 of them

First - Tripadvisor's map has this restaurant in the wrong place. Look up the street name, don't use the map. Beyond that - A great find. Cheap beer, cheap food, good (if sometimes loud) atmosphere. It was a bit difficult getting the attention of a server at the start, but once on the radar, we had no further problems with... More

We headed here on the recommendation of a friend who found out about the place from a local. We eventually found the restaurant entrance (there's a school which a street runs right through - I've attached a photo to help!). As others have said, they can cater for large groups and despite no booking, they were able to seat us... More
