Well-sourced ingredients is where any good food journey begins, so Charlie spencer, head chef and owner of The Poet, ensures we make the most of what the county of Kent and surrounding areas hasto offer. We are very fortunate to have such great quality British produce available to us and it is a pleasure to cook with it. Charlie works with bothmodern and classical methods of cooking, mostly taking influence from British and French cuisine, and to a lesser extent Italian and Spanish.Ultimately Charlie has a drive and passion for food that he wants to share. The Poet at Matfield pub and restaurant, which is situated in the heart of Kent near Tunbridge Wells, offersa warm and comfortable atmosphere to come and experience those efforts.

Good local gastro pub

I reviewed this restaurant a few years back and found it good but poor value. I can honestly say that I have been back a few times and found vast improvements both in quantity and quality. Went back last week and was frankly shocked. I ordered lamb. This consisted of a piece of lamb 3" by 1" with a fifty... More

Dear MykeyJoe Thank you for taking your time to write another review. I am saddened and very frustrated that you have made no effort in letting us correct or deal with your dissatisfaction on the night nor on the comment card left for you to fill in when receiving your bill. But instead posted a negative review. I have served... More

We've been meaning to try The Poet and now wish we'd tried it sooner. We took our elderly parents there Saturday lunchtime to celebrate their birthdays. It wouldn't have been our choice to go at lunchtime but that's when they prefer to eat! The restaurant and bar were quiet but it didn't spoil what turned out to be a perfect... More

On entering the Poet we were greeted by the most accommodating bar man who was absolutely fantastic and looked after our every need. The drinks were top notch. When we sat for dinner, I ordered the crispy egg with broad bean and pea, my wife ordered the goats cheese tart. Unfortunately the poached egg was over cooked but this was... More

Visited for Dinner midweek. What a find ! Lovely location, great atmosphere and wonderful food. However, it is expensive but that will not stop you going back again. If you don't come here you will never know what you have missed. I rest my case

Where better to go for a birthday meal than the Poet at Matfield? Thanks to Fred the chef for great food - beef cooked perfectly medium rare as I'd asked, and my husband enjoyed his favourite fish and chips and then I had delicious chocolate fondant with cherries and cherry kirsch sorbet. And thanks to Andy, Conrad and Mary for... More

I've driven past The Poet dozens of times so finally took the plunge with my partner to see what it's like. We had a very warm welcome from the attentive staff, nice and relaxed and the team on the day couldn't do enough for us. I ordered the roast beef from a nice looking menu, my partner ordered the pulled... More

I have heard so much about the Poet. I guess the real attraction is the restaurant. We came for lunch on a sunny day. It was ok, but not spectacular. Salmon well cooked, garden vegetables well cooked, burger was juicy and chips nice and thick. Wine selection is not great, but there are a couple of decent ones. They said... More

Eaten here many times & have never been disappointed. The bar & restaurant are lovely beamed rooms. There is real ale & a good number of choices on the menu. Try the pork, it melts in your mouth.
