Great food and location

Recently returned to the Poet for the first time in a few months to find it had been renovated and slightly rearranged inside. All very positive and they have managed to rub out the slightly rough edges that previously existed (i.e. the Gents has had a good work-over, for instance!) Food was very... read more

Overall a fantastic restaurant with delicious food - we will definitely be returning! Only a few slight constructive criticisms: Firstly, I would expect linen napkins in a restaurant of this standard, secondly 'Kentish asparagus' was advertised on the menu, however we knew for a fact Kentish asparagus had not yet come into season, perhaps the waitress ought to have mentioned... First time I've written a negative review on TripAdvisor. At least the staff have been trained to a good degree but the food quality simply doesn't marry with the prices. Felt ripped off especially with a sea salt 12.5 percent service charge to rub into the wound. A localised nirvana for the loaded and ignorant. I'm sure you'll be a... More

We called in at the Poet by chance for a light bite. They do not really do snacks but we were able to find good choices from the day's menu and were very pleased with the meals. The oyster mushroom papperdelle was delicious and the "crispy egg" which was a poached egg deepfried in breadcrumbs was just perfect for SWMBO's... More

We visited The Poet as part of a large group (40) for a party and despite being a very large group the food was fantastic. Whilst there is an extensive menu available as a party we were served a choice of home made Salmon Fishcakes or Ham Hock Veloute followed by Roast Chicken on Wild Mushrooms with Chorizo or Roast... The poet is one of my favourites restaurants normally and I have recommended the place to so many people but, last night I was actually really disappointed. Ordered a 'crisp egg with chorizo and broad beans' and my partner the chicken liver parfait- when my egg arrived it had peppers in it which I am allergic to- no mention of... More

We've now been to The Poet several times and never been disappointed. Some of the best chips we've ever had. Deep fried poached egg is amazing (not normally a fan of poached eggs). Interesting menu, cooked and presented well and consistent service. Only let down on the last visit was that they made a mess of making up our bill.... More

We ate here with two friends who were on their way to the Channel Tunnel because the Dovecote at Capel was fully booked. 2 of us ordered the Pulled Pork Bap which came with about 8 chips. The pork was dry and on a dry bun was very unappetising. This for £12!! I ordered the spiced beef which was served... More

We took my father for Sunday lunch as a Birthday celebration. The roasts (we had the pork and the venison) were just as they should be, with a good selection of vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. For dessert, my father had rhubarb crumble and I had bread & butter pudding - scrumptious. Good wine, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Would... More
