Arrived to a tastefully spacious bar and restaurant with cheerful young staff that were so efficient .... a credit to the owners. We were offered various tables to choose from (great touch) - food was presented and were as good as a top restaurant - it tasted as good as it looked. Main meal just as tasty - steak, although... Have always liked the poet since it changed hands but had regarded it as pricey. Thought of it as London prices in Kent. But the food was interesting, well cooked and beautifully presented. Returned there in January after a gap of 6 months and found the service and food was still excellent. Now has a wide range of interesting gins... More

Was slightly dubious as a few negative comments had appeared recently but as it turns out this was an experience not to be missed. From entry to exit we were treated as if we were the only people there. This is a delightlful little establishment, efficiently run by staff who have been there for a while. For example the roast pork, crackling,& accompanying veggies were... We had a lovely evening at the Poet after it being highly recommended to us. To begin with, the service was welcoming, friendly & polite. The atmosphere was spot on for a Friday evening out...food wise, absolutely no disappointment. Every meal was cooked & presented with great care and the puddings, delicious! Would definitely recommend and we look forward to... More

Took the wife for a meal here as we had won vouchers at school raffle.Heard good things beforehand and was not disappointed. Top notch food and service, food portions could have been bigge r but presentation and quality outstanding. Our meal for two would have been £86 without vouchers, but drinks were about £20 which weren't included. No complaints you get... More

My husband daughter and myself visited this pub for dinner after it was recommended. It was very quaint and the staff were very welcoming. The food was very good and we didn't have to wait long. I would definitely return!

Booked lunch yesterday after viewing the Poet's website. The pub and it's menu looked very impressive. Was greeted by a friendly lady who after serving us drinks, asked us to choose from the blackboard, and pointed to where we would be seated. Firstly, the small room that we ate lunch in lacked any kind of atmosphere, felt cold and uninviting.The... More

I was taken here on Saturday night for my birthday, it is a nice country pub, low beams, stove etc. I was unimpressed by the food, we ate it all but that had more to do with the 18 holes of golf beforehand rather that the tasty food. I had the goats cheese salad which was ok, it needed a... More

Matfield is a pretty village and The Poet is a delightful old inn with a lot of character. It is also up against some very good competition, and doesn't match up too well. The meal - dinner for two - was a curious mix of pub grub and gastro and was frankly disappointing. Service was pleasant but starters and mains... More

Sadly the Poet did not live up to our expectations. Food average and service slow. Maybe we picked a bad night to go?!
