Well-sourced ingredients is where any good food journey begins, so Charlie spencer, head chef and owner of The Poet, ensures we make the most of what the county of Kent and surrounding areas hasto offer. We are very fortunate to have such great quality British produce available to us and it is a pleasure to cook with it. Charlie works with bothmodern and classical methods of cooking, mostly taking influence from British and French cuisine, and to a lesser extent Italian and Spanish.Ultimately Charlie has a drive and passion for food that he wants to share. The Poet at Matfield pub and restaurant, which is situated in the heart of Kent near Tunbridge Wells, offersa warm and comfortable atmosphere to come and experience those efforts.

The poet is one of my favourites restaurants normally and I have recommended the place to so many people but, last night I was actually really disappointed. Ordered a 'crisp egg with chorizo and broad beans' and my partner the chicken liver parfait- when my egg arrived it had peppers in it which I am allergic to- no mention of... More

We've now been to The Poet several times and never been disappointed. Some of the best chips we've ever had. Deep fried poached egg is amazing (not normally a fan of poached eggs). Interesting menu, cooked and presented well and consistent service. Only let down on the last visit was that they made a mess of making up our bill.... More

We ate here with two friends who were on their way to the Channel Tunnel because the Dovecote at Capel was fully booked. 2 of us ordered the Pulled Pork Bap which came with about 8 chips. The pork was dry and on a dry bun was very unappetising. This for £12!! I ordered the spiced beef which was served... More

We took my father for Sunday lunch as a Birthday celebration. The roasts (we had the pork and the venison) were just as they should be, with a good selection of vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. For dessert, my father had rhubarb crumble and I had bread & butter pudding - scrumptious. Good wine, friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Would... More

This pub has become our favourite local to visit. Delicious food, especially the puddings and also lovely wine to help wash the food down.

We have eaten at the Poet on a number of occasions, and our most recent visit was particularly impressive. The front of house were as friendly and helpful as ever, but the food was especially good. Celeriac soup doesn't sound exciting, but they seem to have elevated this to an altogether higher level. Same with the chicken liver parfait -... More

I've eaten at the poet a few times now and I am always delighted to see the frequent menu changes that The Poet have on offer. I came in on the Friday evening before Valentines day as being someone from the trade meant I would be working on the busy Saturday evening! For my starter I chose the scallops &... More

I had the steak, it came with chips, nothing else for 24 pounds. They forgot our drinks order and we waited for 20 minutes. Then we ordered wine and they completely forgot that too. The ambience was nice country pub,but that does not give you license for plain expensive food and terrible service, I wish we went for a curry.
