Restaurant looked abandoned. Chatting with locals it appears that it will remain closed. Cannot rate!! Note that the Facebook site for the restaurant has not been updated since 1 July 2012.

We arranged to meet friends in Oamaru and the Loan & Merc was one restaurant we wanted to try. Sunday markets across the road, so it would be a great place to have breakfast. No, not open yet the web site says that it is open for breakfast. No explanation on the door or window. Okay back for dinner. No,... More

The building itself is pretty nifty and being set in the historic part of town made it ideal for taking a wander after lunch. I ordered the rissoles which were basically boiled sausage meat served with mustard so it was incredibly bland and I didn't eat much at all, would want more flavour in the meat I feed my dog!... The Loan and Merc became the bar-restaurant of choice during our conference. They went out of their way to provide good food and good service. Recommended

No - not the food, which by the way was fortunately piping hot! But, sadly, the place is huge and has a cold atmosphere, as well as cold temperature. There are few things worse than being chilled to the bone, while trying to socialise and enjoy a night out. The first area where you enter The Loan and Merc was... More

The menu and food here is fantastic. We wish we could have stayed in Oamaru annother night to try the carvery. The service was also great.

Was pretty hyped to get here - maybe I just had the wrong idea in my head. Didn't find the atmosphere inviting - glad it wasn't full and I didn't have to whack elbows with people I don't know. Service was pretty good. The 'while you are waiting' bits - very disappointed in the thai fish cakes - quite rubbery.... More

Ended up here on a rainy Tuesday at lunch time. We were looking for a warming pub lunch. This isn't a pub but the meal was excellent. Mr G had the soup of the day (oxtail) to start, followed by Colonial Goose - lamb leg stuffed with apricots, herbs & spices, marinated in red wine and slicedin a port and... More

Loan & Merc is a fantastic venue. The interior is fantastic and the staff are very friendly. The only downside for me was that they don't cater very well for (semi) vegetarians nor dairy free problem children! Luckily I do eat fish. After much harrassment of our waiter he produced a bowl of fish for me to "sniff" to check... More

The restaurant is on the old historic part of town. We had the ploughmans platter which was very tasty. The rest of the menu looked interesting but at approx $30 per main was a bit pricey.
