We arrived after dark after a day in transit. The welcome was warn, the chowder, mussels and steak were delicious and an after dinner drink in the bar, whilst doing nothing to cure my ignorance of rugby, did reveal the locals' passion for the game. A lovely pub.

We had a fabulous meal - started with the nz whitebait and the dips and bread. Between us we had the pasta, lamb loin, steak and chicken parmigiana - all we're fabulous. Our only comment would bd that the mains are huge - you don't need the starters!

The best meal we had in South Island. Fabulous Sea Food Chowder, and Cray with salad and chips, lovely local Pinot gris.

I did a fair bit of research and a local recommended this place and town prices way to high. I know crayfish is expensive bug as a nz it's hard to... More

Located on the way to the seal colony the pier has a wonderful sea view and great sunset. Hardly any cars drive in front of the restaurant. The atmosphere is cosy - both inside and outside. Make sure you book in advance - it gets busy during the night. Prices are NZ level. Fresh seafood and decent portions.

The Pier is out of town but worth the effort. We sat having a drink, people-watching and taking in the rugger on the TV while waiting for a table to become free and there seemed to be quite a few locals in there as well as visitors. The ambience is very appealing. The food is good too: we shared a... More

Crayfish was delicious! Beer battered fries - good! Verdict - worth a stop for lunch. Enjoyable surroundings, pleasant food, good service. What more can you ask for?

Lunch was good food. However the wine grossley over priced. This place just misses when it's situation is so good.

We had driven from Picton to Kaikoura arriving late at night. Our motel suggested we go to The Pier Hotel or we would have missed it - at the end of the stretch in Kaikoura a welcome beacon on a very cold and wet night - just about the only one in January. We didnt have a booking, however, despite... More
