Overpriced and not that good....

We were told that The Pier Hotel Restaurant was the best place for Crayfish in Kaikoura. What a disappointment! The dishes are overpriced and the food is not that good. The service is sketchy at best. If you're dying for crayfish, one of the roadside stands might be a better bet than The Pier... read more

Situated on the seafront it has superb views across the bay. Sitting outside on a warm sunny evening with good food and a glass of wine, what more could you want. Gets very busy but the friendly staff seemed to cope well. Would go there again.

Although the food was excellent, and our server was friendly and attentive, we felt quite unwelcome when we arrived. Although we had reservations, we were made to feel as if we were inconveniencing the hosts, and they seated us only grudgingly. We really enjoyed our meal, but we would hesitate to return based on the initial lack of welcome.

We stayed in Kaikoura for 3 day and ate at the Pier twice and that was only because the first night we arrived we didn't realise you had to book a table. The food was very good, the beer and wine lovely and the service very friendly with a "local"feel. If you can get a window seat the view of... More

Situated near the wharf in Kaikoura this hotel/restaurant is a good place to eat with great views over the bay. There is an extensive menu which includes Crayfish. As I haven't sampled this delicacy for quite some time I decided to take the plunge. Sadly the experience was somewhat disappointing - maybe my expectations were just too high. Otherwise a... More

Pleasant old pub near a very short pier in a run down area on the sea front. Half a crayfish sells for $35 with salad & some of the best chips (fries) I have ever had. The cray is good & it's less than half the price we would pay in South Australia. The White bait omelet is very good... More

My brother-in-law and his son had been in kaikoura recently and recommended this place to us, so we had to try it. Can not speak highly enough of this place. The restaurant was packed and very busy. Always a good sign. They opened another room for us to go in and that soon filled up also. I ordered the bread... More

We enjoyed a visit to this historic hotel; wish we had made a dinner reservation to have gotten a window view but the dinner was nice anyway. Lots of historic photos on the wall. Food was fine, no complaints. Enjoyed the massive pavlova for dessert!

Great views, nice atmosphere, on a nice day you can sit outside at one of the picnic tables on the beach side of the road. We had lunch here after doing the Peninsula walk and liked it so much we came back for dinner one night. Had a great bowl of soup and then then Lamb Shank with mint gravy,... More
