Great cake & coffee

Bit of an Acland Street institution. Been here forever and still serving up great Polish & European cakes. Coffee does not miss beat - great attention paid to detail by experienced baristas - pity most other cafes don't have this level of consistency and quality control. Could not go pass a slice of the Sacher Vienna Chocolate Cake. It was absolutely divine, and so big that I didn't feel like much for dinner. Was beautiful sitting outside in the afternoon sun, on a cold winters day, also having a cup of Earl Grey Tea. The interior also looked very quirky and old-fashioned.

Husband, seven year old and I stopped in and enjoyed their polish cheesecake (good quality and tasty) and the chocolate speciality (yum - but ask for it to be heated as it would be even better!). Good coffee and efficient service. I loved the old fashioned interior. Recommended.

This one might not have the most extensive window display. But the quality of the baking is far superior and much more authentic, imagine 100year old recipes all baked on premise. The staff relaxed, friendly and really care about your experience. Which in turn makes for a great atmosphere. Highly recommend the cherry crumble.

Old tables and chairs, Roxy music playing, and a mechanical cash register. Some places go for a retro look, these guys never upgraded. Sit next to the shelves of magazines and you are being asked to stay for a while. I've tried both the signature cakes and wasn't blown away by either, but others with me loved them, and their... Probably the least glamorous of all the cake shops, but it looks more interesting than the others. Coffee was lovely, I had the plum cake which was really nice. My sons thought the cupcakes were rather dry though and the frosting hard rather than soft. Service was good and very friendly. The inside of the shop is as it was... More

Visited Monarch Cakes tonight and was treated to a fabulous array of treats. Advised by family as a must do in St Kilda due to the long history of the store, we couldn't not pop in for a visit. Greeted by big smiles from a man who advised us he had made the cakes, we ordered a lemon tart, cherry... More

We went as it is recommended by friends. There are many cake shops/cafes along the street. Monarch look old, uninspiring and really less attractive compare with the rest. But we decided to give it a try. We order the CHOCOLATE KOOGLHOUPF and the 100 YEAR OLD POLISH RECIPE BAKED CHEESE CAKE. The cheesecake taste good and is more denser and... More

The window has cake galore and inside more cake. It is olde worlde with an old style cash register and old furniture but it feels homely. The staff are lovely and the coffee hot. The slice I had was very well made and tasted amazing.

Very high prices, but is the best in Acland street. Compare these cakes with others it's impossible and a waste of time. The problem is with service: totally inadequate. Buy something or stay, even just for a quick coffe, it's not a good experience.
