Whenever in St Kilda or passing through, my family always requests a stop at Monarch cakes for their wonderful plum cake (sold by the piece or in a slab). The caramel slice is also fabulous, with a fresh buttery shortbread base.We love the decor with it's old fashioned scales and cash register, the 1950's laminex tables and the guarantee that... More

Decent cakes but we had the unfortunate experience of seeing a rat run out from under the counter. Not to mention a very sleazy and inappropriate owner. Won't be coming back here again

We checked out the famous cake shops and settled on Monarch Cake Shop for afternoon tea. The shop is small and the seating very crammed. We tried their famous chocolate kooglhoupf and a piece of cherry crumble slice which had just the right level of sweetness. Probably wouldn't visit again.

Looks can be deceiving - on first glance uninformed passers by could easily be drawn elsewhere upon viewing Monarch's windows display - which looks decidedly modest compared to competing impressive jaw dropping competitors' window presentation... Do so at your peril - Monarch is like a traditional throwback to more traditional days when emphasise was on taste amd quality - not... More

Taste of lemon tart and cherry cumble tooo disappointed...not recommend to come and wonder why so many good comments. Service is good but quality of food should be improved. Perhaps it is a matter of aus appetite that i cant accept?

Ordered a chai latte and a cupcake, service was bad. they spilt the chai latte on the table when it eventually came out after 10 minutes (even though the place was empty). Bad service, very disappointing.

We read the great reviews about the cake shops in acland st so we make it a stop in out visit to Melbourne. Ordered a plum cake and polish cheesecake. Both were not as good as I had expected, I dunno the fuzz, maybe we ordered the wrong item. Service is friendly.

it was excellent! I went back the next day to buy another one. I think kooglehouf in cake form tastes better than in slice (which looks and tastes like choc brownie)

Our Taxi driver recommended this cake shop especially the 100 year old recipe for their Polish baked cheesecake. We tried it and unfortunately we bought only one slice!! For $5 a slice wished we had bought the whole cake! We also bought a slice of the Vanilla Slice, yummy too. The wide range of cakes and pastries is excellent and... More

St Kilda and Acland Street are known for cake shops, and Monarch rules this corner of the Empire. There are many of note, for us the plum cake and the chocolate creation served in the shape of a kugelhopf are the tops, you can choose your own. The inside has not been done over in many decades, it figures piles... More
