Great ribs and gumbo

On a recent weekend visit to Launceston we tried dinner at Smokey Joes. On a beautiful balmy Saturday night it was full mostly with local families. With the doors to the verandah open it was lovely to sit either inside or out. Service was welcoming and prompt. Beef brisket was wonderful and my son... read more

Stumbled on this restaurant and could not believe how good it was. Is actually very, very authentic Cajun and BBQ. Brisket is to die for - smokey, tender, with a great bark- just like it's meant to be. Seafood gumbo was fantistic. Big servings at a reasonable price.

We dined here while enjoying our trip through Tasmania. The service was really good and most of the food was delicious. We thought the ribs weren't too nice though, the meat was dry and it didn't fall off the bone like it should. Apart from this, really liked the décor, atmosphere and service.

I took the advice and so please I did. The food is simple but flavours complex. This was our final night in Tassie and after eating out for so long it was great to get a 'home cooked' meal. Staff attentive, food came out without too long a wait and everything was polished off. The owner is worth a chat... More

Very convivial atmosphere in which to enjoy exotic international fare presented in a relaxed and homely way. The setting in a former residential premises allows for separate indoor and outdoor dining spaces, which can be good if there is a large group in the main dining room. Loved the seasonal cobbler offerings for dessert.

On my first road trip around Tasmania I stumbled across this gem of a restaurant in a small street in lucky Launceston. The signage was obscured by a tree, so it took some time to locate the restaurant in an old house. So happy to have some really well cooked meat dishes that are unique to the southern States of... Went to this restaurant with my husband for my birthday, as a us expat I was really looking forward to creole/bbq. I had a delicious margarita & onion ring entrée, the server was nice and the dining room was lovely although cramped. After what seemed like a long wait we received our mains. I originally wanted the gumbo, but was... More

Scampi is NOT prepared with a dark roux. Obviously the confusion arose when the gumbo (built on a very dark roux) was sold out. I thank you and your husband for your patronage, and hope that your future dining in Tasmania is more to your taste. More

Wow! What a utter disappointment. By far the worst ribs I've ever eaten. Lean and flavorless. Ok flavorless is the wrong word, more less lack of depth of flavor. If you want Creole/ Cajun food attempt it at home after googling the recipe. You'll do a better job, without a doubt! The pic is a generous representation of the ribs.

Funny how this review is different from the one you left on our facebook page. Two separate reviews on here from one couple. Classy. We thank you for your patronage and hope that your future dining in Tasmania is more suited to your tastes. More

Went on a Wednesday night with workmates and everything was superb. Friendly waitstaff, excellent meals and good value. Ribs are to die for, the pulled pork Po boy is a credit to the chef as is one of the best I've aver had. Thank you so much to all the staff as you certainly do Launceston proud

It's a little hard to find. The signage is subtle. Keep looking. Just had dinner there with the family. As a Texas, I feel somewhat qualified to comment on the quality of bar-b-q. This place does it pretty well. It seems to be an amalgamation of Louisiana (creole-style) and Texas (slow smoked). The result is a somewhat spicy smoked meat.... More
