Best date scones in the south!

I haven't had a meal at this cafe (in a lovely Art Deco building in Mornington) but after having a date scone there on a recent visit to Dunedin I went back the next day and the day after to try them again! They are consistently light, delicious, full of dates and the best I have had in a very... read more

Such a shame because the food was good. But the service was shocking. A simple hello when you walk in is standard even for a cafe.. but nope not these girls. There's was a large table of 12 ladies down stairs and when another guest enquired as to where there food was as the was a reasonable wait, the lady... More

I've been here a couple of times for coffee and have found it quite pleasant. This time however I wasn't overall impressed. My partner ordered the big breakfast...what kind of big breakfast doesn't have sausages and have to pay extra for? I had eggs benedict with hollandaise on the side, it was soo bland didn't even taste like hollandaise. Both... More

We have only been to Alto once before, that time for lunch, which we enjoyed. This visit was for breakfast, which was a little disappointing. Slow service though friendly staff. The food was satisfactory, but nothing more. No choice of how the big breakfast eggs were cooked (which turned out to be overdone poached eggs). There are better choices.

this is a great place to have lunch, morning & afternoon catch up with friends. Food is great, but a very busy place so sometimes you have to wait for a table but it is worth it.

We usually try to have a gluten free salad at any place we go to for lunch, and Alto catered for this. The salad and coffee were lovely. We sat in a sunny spot inside. We parked in the Countdown car park across the road because parking can be a problem at times. Have only visited once but must make... More

My wife and I had a light midday meal at Alto restaurant. The restaurant was busy with most tables in use - usually a positive sign. My wife had a roast vegetable salad and I had a cheese, ham and pineapple filled roll. Both meals arrived very promptly and both looked appetising. The roll was fine - nothing exceptional - just... We went to Alto today for Brunch and were just blown away with the meal that we received, it was one of the best in town by far.

I went to Alto today for a family birthday... I had the Beef burger w/ fries. The burger included a good patty, melted cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, some sort of mayonnaise or tartare thing, and a really nice tomato relish. All for just $18.90! It was very delicious and I am sure I'll have it again. My sister had the... More

Though the cafe is sunny and warm, the coffee is very average. The staff could afford to smile sometimes too - I didn't feel very welcome there. I live just around the corner, yet I always bypass Alto to go to more welcoming cafes down the hill, like Nectar on Princes.
