that Mother Nature got the best of this beautiful building and wonderful restaurant. Damned earthquakes! Date listed is August 2011 but it 'finished' in February.

A one off experience. Live entertainment. Not in operation at the moment though due to the earthquakes.

Moving the music from the background to the main event is a clever idea and it comes off well. There are no challenges to middlebrow tastes and Gershwin, Lloyd-Weber and the Beatles are preferred to Bach and Boulez but management have not learned much about keeping diners happy. If you wait 40 minutes to get a drink and the menus... More

The idea here is to combine great food and music in one setting. The food and wine were good and I particularly liked the pianist who was performing that night - effortless. The spin is all the staff are musicians and you can tell. The way the wine was poured would make professional cringe. I also could not lose the... More

This was a wonderful experience both food and music. Both had the tasting plate for starters, the 4 bone rack lamb mains(me) and Beef Wellington (hubbie), cheese plate (hubbie) and Choc Mouse(me), pianist played and sang as did our waitress. The night was topped off with an organist playing the organ that dates back to the 1800's. The whole "event"... More

Dinner at the Octagon last night would have to be our most memorable dining experience. They have raised the bar to new heights for us. There were seven of us in our party and we had taken our elderly father out to dinner. From the moment of being warmly greeted outside by the maitre dit through to having a special... More

We dined there on 23 December 2010 on the high recommendation of American friends in Australia. It is an 8-sided former church built in the 1870s. Located near the main Cathedral in the heart of Christchurch, the Octagon has lovely stained glass windows and wonderful acoustics that come from the rich wood ceilings and a massive working pipe organ. The... More

This was one of the best restaurants I have been to in a very long time. It was certainly the best I went to in New Zealand. It had the perfect mix of atmosphere, great food, entertainment, and exceedingly polite staff. The food: The menu is fantastic, and you can't go wrong with any of the choices. There are even... More

My sister and I were standing outside the restaurant before it was open, reading the sign and asking ourselves if we should go in and book, we knew not much about the place, and the owner came out and invited us in to look around! We were delighted (wowww beautiful place) and we made a booking. On our return that... More
