Hidden gem in a sea of craft beer establishments

Arriving in Wellington yesterday we dropped off our hire car and were keen for a glass of wine after the drive from Napier. A bit of a search on here revealed this gem of a place in a town that is currently crazy about all things and anything craft beer. That's not normally a bad thing except when... read more

Have been meaning to go here for a while as being locals we had heard a lot about the place. We arrived without a booking on a Friday night and only had to wait 20mins in the bar before we were seated. The bar started a tab for us which made things easier. Great bar staff - very friendly and... More

Despite living in Wellington for years and years, this was a bucket list eatery that I hadn't made it to up until last week. We booked for an early Sunday sitting and it certainly is a popular place to eat. The food was great and the wait staff excellent and attentive. Only real down side (easily fixed) is that I... More

One of my old faves when I was living in Wellington so natural choice to meet some girlfriends for a drink at 6 on a cold typical Wellington night! I was told that the tables in the atmospheric warm part of the restaurant were for diners-and to go to the bar or outside. Outside was cold and stank of ciggie... More

Our first visit to Matterhorn was excellent. The food is very high quality and very interesting. Portion sizes are not enormous but a main and dessert was a good meal. They had a real open fire which added to the atmosphere although we did come away a bit smokey. Coffee was excellent but hot chocolates not the best - a... More

We loved our meal at Matterhorn. Interesting and tasty meals - fine dining but not too pretentious. Thanks for a fab evening.

We went in here to check it out before committing - the exterior is not particularly attractive. As soon as we opened the door, we loved the ambience and decided on the spot this was the place for us, which was confirmed as we walked past the very well appointed bar! We enjoyed a unique meal of unusual flavors and... More

Enjoyed everything that Matterhorn had to offer. Food, atmosphere, location and service. Our waitstaff for the night took very good care of our group.

We went here for dinner, one very cold winters evening. The open fire added to the ambience, and to keeping us warm. The dinner was excellent, while the serves are not large, so go for entree and main or main and dessert. The cheese plate for dessert was excellent, although it contained very little cheese. A surprisingly good selection of... More
