Kiwiana at its best

We loved the food and the service but more importantly the entertainment. Some of the best voices sitting around having a jam session. Ps the scenery of the water and kids splashing around and relaxed atmosphere topped off a great arvo.

With 3 Danish visitors, I was looking for authentic Maori food in Wellington. Here at the Karaka Cafe, right on the waterfront, with views over the lagoon, is the ideal spot. A shared hangi for 4 people cost just $65, and we needed a doggy-bag to take home what we couldn't finish! It included chicken, pork, kumara, pumpkin, zucchini, water-cress... More

After a visit to Te Papa on a hot day we dropped into Karaka for a coffee. It was great to see people just enjoying relaxing outside on beanbags and we were really impressed when a bottle of tap water and a couple of glasses were placed on our table without us asking. Then when the coffee arrived it was... More

A delightful quirk that takes full advantage of the beautiful location of this cafe. Beanbags for use on the terrace overlooking the water. Lovely. This is a great cafe for both a takeaway coffee or for a meal. Reasonably priced options (didn't try the dinner menu - breakfast seemed on par/average cost). Lovely selection of goodies (savoury and sweet) in... More

Only two of us. Got the wrong order. Waited nearly an hour for food in total! Ordered fish of day drowned in butter, tiny pack of cards piece of fish. Token two lettuce leaves. Only Half a potato scalloped. Waiter was lovely and apologetic. However totally shocked at Bar Managers attitude - complained not 200g of fish. To receive a... More

Do not recommend at all. Cold food cold coffee poor service. Would never return. Go somewhere else even if it's a 20 min walk away

Good location close to Te Papa museum with nice decor and friendly service. Houses a waka/Maori canoe while looking over a small lagoon. Good choice of indoor or outdoor spaces to chill or dine.

Manaakitanga (hospitality) and Aroha was overflowing. The manager and his lovely wife were amazing hosts and their staff went out of their way to cater to our needs. I would refer this fine establishment to all my friends and whanau without hesitation.

I keep hoping this cafe will improve because of its stunning position but have truly given up. Went there again today for brunch at 1 pm. Menu says brunch available till 3 but they were not serving any more at 1. Lunch menu is expensive and awful. Waited 20 minutes for water and glasses, 30 minutes for a really bad... More

So after leaving Welly on my travels, I had this one song in my head I'd heard from Karaka Cafe. It was like my NZ tune. I took to google with no avail, desperately searching song lyrics I'd been humming to myself. Keri from the Karaka Cafe took it upon herself to check over her playlist and short of singing... More
