We found Tanuki's cave while walking around Auckland. We must have arrived at the perfect time because we got a seat straight away but the place filled up very quickly! We had a group of four and enjoyed the small, sharable plates. The Japanese beer was cheap and the food, delicious. If I remember correctly, there were these mashed kumara... More

I really enjoy coming here. The menu has a large range of food and the staff are super cute and friendly. You come in off the street down into a lightly lit, buzzing place usually full of people. You can sit at the bar or there a are a few tables around the wall, for a couple I suggest sitting... More

Wonderful delicious fresh food. Nice people and good service. We have been often here for dinner and always return because one could get a good meal for not so much money.

We adore this place! Always on a short waitlist with a nice leaner to wait at while having a drink. For two people you get to sit at the bar and experience great service as there are always staff hovering around to take your order. However, my three experiences sitting at tables with friends has been shocking! Very slow service,... More

When we were living in France, we used to go to our japanese restaurant every Friday night. When we moved in Auckland, I was first happy to see so many japanese restaurants everywhere. But I was quickly desillusioned : only poor quality fish in the middle of a stack of overcooked rice... until last night ! After a show at... More

We like to think of ourselves as "regulars" at Tanuki's Cave (yes that's the dark cavern downstairs full of couples - mostly Japanese, certainly a good sign!) The scotch fillet steak is exceptional - truly worth the visit alone. I personally like to accompany it with a draught Sapporo and their warm sake. Eat sitting at the bar to soak... More

We had a fun, tasty final-night-in-Auckland dinner at Tanuki's Cave. The yakatori offerings were varied and all equally good. As someone who is allergic to MSG, I loved the "grilled with salt" option to avoid the sauces.

We were recommended to go downstairs to the cave so we did and sat at the bar.It was extremely warm and there were cartoons showing on the large TV screen ,odd ! Perhaps we made the wrong choice but the waitress said the cabbage entree was a hot favourite so we ordered it. Well, it was just a fresh white... More

In Australia we would call this place a yakitori bar. These yakitori come in serves of 2 and are very tasty.
