What is a Freehouse you ask? In a nutshell, it is exactly that...A bar that is Free from Big Brewery influence. We pour what we want based on taste and customer feedback. We are not under any contracts with any brewery so we only stock the very best that NZ brewers have to offer. Welcome to the home of Craft Beer in Newmarket, Auckland! A cool and laid back bar, with 15 local brews on tap, playing sweet tunes, with ideas and concepts throughout the bar that are just a little bit crafty. From darts, to pool, to chalkboard tables that have tic tack toe (naughts and crosses) lines painted on them so you can challenge your mates, to coasters made from recycled beer boxes, it's all a little crafty. Kick back and try one of the largest craft beer selections Auckland has to offer. Conveniently located on the corner of Khyber Pass Road and Broadway in Newmarket, there is ample parking all around us in the many towers as well as plenty of street parking.

Great place

This place was quite good. Only confusion was that you need to order from the bar. We stopped by on the way to the airport and despite being busy the food came out quite quickly. I had the chicken tacos, they were excellent, my sister had a pizza the margarita and wasn't too impressed. And her... read more

Very cool place. Great vibe and friendly knowledgeable staff. We had heard great things about the local beers so made sure to stop in for a beer. We decided on a tasting paddle of 5 beers and settled in on the bean bags out on the beer garden. Ordered the Ribs and boy, were they delicious, the meat just fell... More

I was lucky enough to be recommended The Lumsden to hold my 40th Birthday Celebration, and I was clever enough to choose to do so! Right from the moment I arrived to set up the staff were nothing but outstanding. Nothing was a problem for them, and they went above and beyond what they needed to - even popping out... More

just happenned to be walking passed when we seen the craft beer sign. Well we weren't dissapointed. Great range to choose from on pump and bottled. Service was great and the bar man was very knowledgeable about the beers we chose.

WORST SERVICE EVER!!! LAZY!!! RACIST!!! STAFF. I am not a person to write a review unless it was really good or really really trully bad and horrible. I was so disgusted with their service and how they treat a customer. The bar has a great atmosphere and It's a such a shame to have such a lazy, racist staffs. I... More

Dear reviewer, Although we appreciate all reviews about our establishment so that we can continue to improve, there are instances where we must take a stand. You see, for others reading this I shall make it very clear as to what this reviewer is actually talking about. This is not a review about food or beverage but about the service... More

Great location with outdoor seating. Chalk tables were cute but not practical. Food was fantastic, would recommend the chicken lettuce wraps. Service was appalling to the point where I would love to go back for the food but can't deal with the attitude of some of the staff.

We are absolutely horrified to hear that you had bad service, we pride ourselves on our service and so to receive this feedback is of a big concern to us. If you could advise what date you visited us so that we can investigate this further with the staff on duty that particular day. Our entire team have read this... More

Great outdoor spot for a few beers. Solid selection, delicious popcorn, and you can draw on the table. Would definitely return

Stupidly, we went shopping on Boxing Day, but amid all the furore involved with everyone trying to bag a bargain we found the Lumsden! Great craft beer, fantastic food, great service. Wouldn't even call the food "pub grub" as it caters for those wanting carbs and those needing to go without. Would recommend the lettuce wraps for sure! Looking forward... More

Next time your spouse is keen to make a shopping trip to Newmarket, see if you can bargain for lunch at The Lumsden- a brew pub near the corner of Khyber Pass and Broadway. Whilst the food is pretty darn good- it's not the main draw. The Lumsden is a free-house pub, not associated with any particular brewery and as... More

We called in for a meal and to get out of the rain. The waitress here is wonderfully friendly and hospitable. We ordered fish and chips and a burger. The fish and chips was Kawhai and when is freshly caught and cooked it is very very good. The burger was big and we'll flavoured. It was a good basic meal... More
