A Melbourne institution

It is all about the granita and the crème caramel. This is a little hole in the wall kind of place that is like reliving your childhood - mainly because things don't change much here. Why change a winner? The dishes are simple, good solid Italian dishes. It is filling and sitting up at the bar is... read more

We had dinner here one evening & if you want delicious home cooked food then you better try this place. It's not licensed or BYO but great for an evening where you don't have to bother cooking.

If these walls could only talk. This traditional italian restaurant is a time capsule transporting you back in time. The simple and well worn interior reflects the tried and tested italian classics on offer. I have samples several of the pastas and last night indulged in the lasagna. Served with a large slice of buttered bread and washed down with... More

Ordered ravioli and it seemed to take a long time. When the food was delivered, it was spaghetti. I advised the guy who took my order that I had asked for ravioli, he just looked at me and didn't even attempt to change the order. The young staff have no customer service. I will not be returning nor will I... More

A must while in Melbourne. A cup of coffee or a plate of pasta. Traditional style Italian Food. We enjoyed a bowl of lasagne and canalloni. Great flavour, basic presentation. Atmosphere old style but has character. All ages enjoying coffee/pasta.not licenced. Staff helpful. It's been here for years. Check it out.

Old world (Italian) setting, good food and left full. Got the feeling however that staff didn't really want to be there. I suspected this might be the case as that is what it was like the first time I went there a few months ago. Kind of reminded me of the soup kitchen episode on Sienfeld. A smile goes a... More

Sloppy , horrible presentation but amazing taste and that's what it is about. Don't come here for a first date. Come here for a good ol' fashion nonna like feed. Super sized dessert portions, beautiful coffee and very well priced. It's been an icon for years and running strong. This is Melbourne.

My wife and I rarely eat pasta out (she's Italian) but Pellegrini's is the one and only exception. If you ask to sit in the kitchen, you are actually sitting in the kitchen where your food is cooked. Quick, swift and well priced pasta and/or lasagna is what you will expect and get, just like Nonna' used to make. Love... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
