When we opened the doors to MoVida in Hosier lane, Melbourne in 2003 no one knew what to expect. Here was this little bar on a graffiti covered cobbled lane near the

cathedral serving Spanish tapas and shared plates in a down lit room playing funky tunes.

It's the kind of place you can come in for a beer and a jamon croquetta at the bar and then move across to a table and share a plate of slow

braised lamb, some patatas a lo pobre and down some seriously good Spanish red wine.

We had been given a voucher for dinner at MoVida as a highlight for out last night in Melbourne. It did not serve the purpose. We entered through a hole in the wall of a graffiti-riddled alley into a fairly bare room full of tables packed so closely it was fairly difficult to sidle between them. The noise level from... Located in one of Melbourne's famous, graffiti- and mural-covered lanes, MoVida is by now an institution. Time has not withered its quality, and this is the place to go for excellent tapas and very good service. But with the passage of time it is possible that MoVida is no longer a top pick. It has a certain "been there, done... More

Have nothing bad to say about this quirky little establishment which is situated down a cool graffiti covered alleyway. Food was exceptional and way above expectation. A particular mention to the white anchovy on Parmesan crisp which was superb. Lamb was sensational and fell of the fork. Nice atmosphere with a mix of hip young kids, large family groups and... Great place to grab a bite, the tartare was the standout this visit. Good wine selection, would have liked a beer but nothing appealed to us on the menu. Service was fast and friendly.

We got lucky... the day before we saw a line out the door to get a table. The next day, we got there at an odd hour but it worked out. We ordered from the happy hour menu and then the menu expanded to the dinner menu!! OMG! Best beef tartar ever!!! This includes the beef tartare I've had in... More

Looking forward to this dining experience at Movida and finally getting there on our last visit to Melbourne for the Australian Open we were very disappointed. This restaurant is very bad value for money and we think succeeds on a reputation which is not warranted. We ate more than several tapas which were delicious but when we came to the... More

If you are at the bar and Houston is your waiter/bartender, you will enjoy your service. Such a sweet guy!!! First time coming here and eating at a Spanish restaurant so Houston noticed that and gave me some recommendations. I ordered the Zarzuela (seafood stew). It wasn't too bad. (In my mind, I would want some carbs, like rice, to... More

We secured our booking three months ago and it was worth the wait! The food is amazing, backed up by a very proficient wine list and seamless service. There's so many incredible dishes in the menu. I'd recommend going with a group to allow you to share and try a greater number of the tapas. One more recommendation: the truffle... More

Was able to get a table in an hour or so and he food was worth the wait. Only downside is the size of the portions, I know its tapas but needed several to feel full. Service was excellent and location in Hosier Lane adds an atmosphere which can whiz you away from Melbourne.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
