Best Cantonese food in Melbourne

As usual the service was impeccable and the food was great. We let the staff choose our dishes and they were all that we expected. As this is fine dining it is perfect for a special occasion

We dine out a lot and my partner booked Flower Drum because it's a Melbourne institution that you have to go to once. The bottom line? Slow service (we were almost hunting down the trolleys!), very small but expensive serves. Food was good but no better than a good suburban Chinese. Wine list offered few wines by the glass and... I took my wife here for a belated birthday lunch (With kids lunches are easier with kids). This restaurant has been on our list for a long time and it certainly did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in the service and attention was impeccable, old school. I know there has been a few review lately that it has... More

Some of the finest Chinese seafood we've had. A little pricey, but service and food impeccable. We had calamari in XO chili sauce, a combination of stir fried mixed Chinese veggies (all high quality greens, no carrot, cabbage or corn fillers), and an amazing appetizer of scallops, tofu and salmon roe.

...... So expectation was very high. Service 5/5. Food: ordered the peking duck pancakes and loved, the steak for the main and the mango dessert. The steak was a let down but the other two courses were delicious but not extrodinary like I was expecting. To be fair I will go back a second time, and order something different, and... More

Delicious traditional Chinese food with a nod to modern styles. Have not enjoyed such hospitality and attentiveness for quite a while. Went all out to impress us and did, although may be too traditional for some. Had four gorgeous courses and left not overly bloated!

I had been to the Flower Drum a couple of years ago and thoroughly loved it. I decided to spoil my my mother when she was in Melbourne, as I knew it was expensive but I thought it was worth it after my first visit. However my most recent visit, was so bitterly disappointing, yet so damn expensive.. We ordered... More

Went with my wife to celebrate my birthday. The food was fresh and very enjoyable and the staff were excellent. It is expensive but if you plan your meal you can have a great evening without breaking the bank.

Everything about the Flower Drum was superb - the food - traditional Chinese but tweaked. Several dishes prepared beside us. The service was unobtrusive and urbane. We went there last 20 years ago, but won't wait another 20 years before returning

We came after reading the reviews and where very much looking forward to a meal there since we had arrived in Melbourne just that morning so this was to be a special treat. Well is was anything but special and my recommendations to all is do not walk from this place but run. We ordered wanton soup and it was... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
