Authentic Japanese food

I am Japanese and very often I get a disappointment when the food served by a so called "Japanese Restaurant" is not "Japanese" food. But Akita's Japanese food is proper!

As there were no customers. All three waitresses were stood watching us eat so that they could serve us to have something to do. Not very relaxing experience.

Excellent and authentic Japanese restaurant in a city that shines for great food options. We have been there twice already, and will certainly return in the future. In particular, sushi and sashimi are of outstanding quality. I also like the sake tasting set, excellent opportunity to try three different kinds without having too much alcohol. Service is attentive and value... More

We shared beautifully presented extremely fresh sashimi. The tempura was declicous and delicate. We also had cold sake which complimented the meal perfectly. Resturant has an unassuming exterior but inside you were transported to a very tranditional Japanese ambiance, very polite and attentive service! Top notch experience.

Lovely attentive service. Very good range of dishes. The sashimi was very good especially the kingfish and salmon. The tempura was as good - beautifully cooked. We also had several other "entrees" such as the sardines, the zucchini and squid and a custard with prawns dish. All well presented and interesting dishes. Didn't look at their wine list so can't... Last time we went to Akita was last year just before the old owners left. So we thought we would give it a try with new people. The menu was much the same, teriyaki chicken was a little dry , my husband had the Teriyaki beef, veg wasn't as good either. Akita was always BYO, But now they have changed... More

If you love traditional Japanese food, then you must visit Akita in North Melbourne. The food is beautifully presented and is oh..... so delicious. With a vast menu selection, there is sure to be something to suit everyone. I recommend sharing your dishes with your fellow diners, as I did with my husband and two teenage daughters. We did not... I have been dining at Akita regularly although not often for more than twenty years. From the early days at the Moomba hotel to Clarendon St. to North Melbourne they have always presented delightful food at a fair price. The menu has changed over the years and always for the better. I have my favourites and suggest that should you... More

The owners have changed recently of this reliably good Japanese restaurant, but that doesn't mean a change in the quality of the food. This is one of Melbourne's best Japanese restaurants- all staff that work there in the kitchen, the sushi chef, the waiters and waitresses are all Japanese. The food is delicious, fresh and authentic. Prices are reasonable, service... More
