Wonderful...everything!

My father and l had a gorgeous pre-theatre lunch experience on Saturday - beautiful blue-eye fish and caponata, and potatoes, and a rocket parmesan salad. We wanted a "cheap and cheerful"restaurant after arriving that day. The City Wine Shop was an outstanding find. Quality food and wine at reasonable prices. Mains $22-27 were excellent with the Chicken Scnitzel (breast) winning the signature dish of the night. Interesting choice on (blackboard) menu. Wine could be chosen from wine shop and served at your table at wine... More

During our recent stay in Melbourne we met friends here for lunch during the week. It was sensational - the ambience, the service and the food are all fabulous. It was so good we returned here with my parents at the end of our holiday. This was a Sunday lunch and everything was perfect yet again. Highly recommend sitting outside... More

Kitchen is open all day so this is a perfect venue for a long lunch arriving when it suits you. You can sit either in or outdoors; purchase wine by the glass before selecting a bottle from the wine shop at retail prices to which $20 corkage is charged; bar and lunch menu is extensive and the CWS can easily... Wonderful selection of wine displayed on the wall, wine store style. We ordered a pinot and enjoyed this with two very nice well priced meals. The chicken schnitzel is particularly nice. The government buildings create a reall nice back drop.

Fairly limited menu with chicken schnitzel the standout dish with the best (only) coleslaw I've ever enjoyed. Good desserts available as well. Efficient service that tries to please. I ate there twice in four days and enjoyed it both times. Communal tables but not cramped at all. Of course big selection of wine, including by the glass, as well as... More

Eating sidewalk cafe style one sees Parliament House, the trams and the passing parade. Dined there in November and decided to return. The food is good without being special, though the gnocchi with seasonal vegetables was packed with flavours. Chose a bottle of Bordeaux ($67) from the inside shelf and the very knowledgeable waiter, from France, was most helpful. 10%... More

Dining here for breakfast the City Wine Shop is an oasis of calm and reserve. Simple breakfast menu..that is no bacon and eggs for example but pastries and toasts. Great coffee ($4.20 Latte) and toasted ham and cheese with mustard ($8.50). They do surcharge 10% on Sunday. Also great place for lunch and great choice of wines etc. One of... More

I meet a girlfriend here I have not seen for 4 years. Neither of us live in Melbourne anymore but we're home for Christmas. We shared olives, pate, cheeses and lost of wine. A fun night busy, buzzing we were the last to leave! Love wine bars like this in Melbourne. We reminised how we used to go to the... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
