Steak was good and price was on par with good food prices. Salad bar was well present and had good variety. Service was good and place was set up up like an old style tavern.

Very nice, well cooked steak. Salad bar was good (nothing special). Overall a good experience in a great location.

Was a little worried about eating at Ball and chain after reading mixed reviews on urbanspoon; really glad we gave it a go! The steak was sensational, the salad buffet (complimentary with any main meal) was really great value, and the service was attentive and polite. Definitely recommended!

My wife and I had 3 hours to pass while our daughter was attending a graduation dinner. Fortunately for us it was on 300 metres to the Ball and Chain Grill, a well known an respected restaurant we probably visit 3 to 4 times a year. It was a busy night and we had to take a seat at the... More

We came here twice, for dinner and a few days later for dinner. It is in a convict era sandstone building, with a nice airy conservatory type area at the rear. The menu is mainly meat and seafood on the grill, with a wide variety of other options. We had beef cheeks, venison, quail and the rib eye, and all... More

A couple of years had passed since I last visited this Hobart landmark. The menu, decor and probably many of the staff were as I remember. Then again, not much has changed since my first experience of the place in about 1987. Last visit, things were pretty mediocre, so we weren't expecting Great Things. But we were surprised. Ignoring the... More

I would rate this as a 3.5. The food was good and inexpensive with large servings. However be warned it is very busy and noisy

We attended in a large group so the single waiter had problems taking drink, entree and main orders at different times, the food and wine was excellent when the right choices had been made
