Everyone I spoke to who had visited Hobart said you must try Garagistes, but you will never get in. Fortunately they now do online bookings two weeks ahead of your desired date. All very civilized but they do the two seating thing which drives some nuts. And another observation to make is that it is a communal bar seating arrangement.... More

Based on recommendations from TripAdvisor, blogs and newspaper articles, we shoes Garagistes as the restaurant to dine in for the first night of our four-night mini-break in Tasmania. We were underwhelmed by the food, although the waitstaff can teach a thing or two to waitstaff in some of the better restaurants in Melbourne for friendliness, engagement and helpfulness. The food... Some of the offerings on our vegetarian degustation (5 courses) were superb, others were a little lacklustre or over powered by single flavour (liquorice). But definitely worth tasting. The service started promptly with plenty of zing but the second to last course took 30 minutes to arrive after previous plates were cleared giving the evening a bit of drag and... More

First time we went to Tassie they didn't take bookings so my husband and I were determined to come back and enjoy. We managed to get in this time around when we returned to Tassie. I had high expectations and the food was amazing. The combinations of flavours were unimaginable and unique. The octopus dish was like coming across a... More

Tried walking into this restaurant several times as they didn't take bookings. Was turned away each time as they were full. Disappointing, and hard to find anywhere else without a booking, so a couple of disappointing nights. They eventually started taking bookings (declining customers maybe?) so managed to get in with friends. One of our friends had eaten there before... More

The food at Garagistes is wonderful, particularly the savory courses, with flavour combinations that we haven't seen elsewhere. The wine list also provided the right type of options to work with the food, particularly enabling us to order 375ml carafes of a good range of wines so that we could vary the wine throughout the night with the food. Service... More

The entrance to the restaurant is so inconspicuous from the street, looking almost like a warehouse, but once you enter the restaurant it immediately strikes you as almost a communal eating area of bench tables. The reputation of the food on offer had a lot to live up to and it did just that. We had the five course meal... More

From the minute you walk in the door it all becomes part of a great night out. A 'nothing' entrance leads to a great communal table setup. A greeting by a friendly staff member who takes you through the system instantly puts you into the comfort zone and the table staffers clearly have eyes everywhere. The 5 courses hit the... More

If a popular place in the style of Garagistes is operating in the West Village in NYC (and I am sure it is), you would expect the staff to be snooty and oh-so cooler than their average customer. Not so in Garagistes, where a blend of style and modern food is matched beautifully with an old world Tasmanian welcome and... More
