Located opposite Newtown police station, this unusually monikered noshery serves a Mod Oz degustation worthy of its more fancy rivals in the city. The restaurant itself is tiny - being an old terrace house similar to those ubiquitous in an inner city suburb like Newtown - it sits only 28 people; compare that to Tetsuya's which sits 120. The 8 course degustation for $95 is exceptionally good value for food that is so creative and skillfully prepared. The intimate and humble setting make this a far more "authentic" and real dining experience than any number of 3 hatted restaurants in Sydney. My top (yet far from most expensive) dining experience for 2008. more

Incredible food - the venison with chocolate soil is a particular winner. Since I last went it has changed to degustation style which makes it a little too pricey.. more

At $55 per head for 3 course a la carte, this is wickedly good value. However, the change is coming with a fixed price degustation at ~$95. It will be interesting to see how this holds up. Still BYO, and still will be exceptionally good value no doubt with the changes. more
