One of those Hidden Gems

I doubt I would have been able to find pubs like this in the days before the internet, unless of course I was really familiar with the area (and as it turns out there were heaps of pubs in Adelaide that I had no idea existed until the internet came along). It is located in one of the back streets... read more

We spent New Year's Eve here in a party of 12 friends and family. (31/12/2015). A very friendly, proper pub, with a restaurant attached. The food and service were great, and also very reasonably priced for this very upmarket suburb. Afterwards it was only a short walk to the waterfront park with uninterrupted views to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and... More

We had a 40th in the upstairs area...great where you can have entire level for your own group. A full bar and great canapés to go along with. The staff were nice and friendly. Lots of tables and chairs or couches to relax in and also in an easy to get to location just off the main drag. Plenty of... More

Ambience great, service ok, food very ordinary. We ordered four separate dishes all of which were either tasteless or cheap cuts of meat. Example was the veal shanks- ' skinny' shanks with a gnocchi that was like polystyrene - likely frozen and re heated. Wouldn't return- balmain is a Mecca of great pubs- and the royal oak is below par.

This is a lovely venue that doesn't quite live up to its potential. The food is hit and miss, as is the service. Some of the dishes are great, such as the veal shanks and the goat curry. But others are perplexingly ordinary, including an overdone sirloin with an indistinguishable sauce. The drinks included with the kids' meals never did... More

the Royal Oak is a must on a cold winter's evening. The warmth comes from the great food, the fire, the friendly staff and the happy diners.

The food was good but it just missed the mark I admit I am on the search for a decent fish and chips and theirs was OK, the chips were crunchy (however they were the reconstituted potato kind with flour on the outside - so no good for GF people if eating other meals with chips) the fish - Flathead... Went here with friends, despite having been told by others of a poor experience at this local hotel restaurant. What we found was a large space with an open fire and other heat sources to keep us warm on what was a chilly night, friendly staff (except for the grumpy, older male waiter) a pretty comprehensive menu and a reasonable... The Himalayan goat curry is amazing and must be tried. Service prompt and friendly. The Oak will be sadly missed when I return to UK.

Don't bother. The service is dreadful and food average. We waited forever for our main course. The glass of wine they served me was tiny. Dissapointing
