Not as good as it used to be

Scholar has lost some of its appeal over recent years. When the trolleys came around at lunch time every day (as they still do on weekends), it was much easier to order for a small group. When as the New Shanghai it was one of the few yum cha / dumpling restaurants in Canberra it was a... read more

Not too many places do fresh seafood in Canberra, however Scholar not only offer this but also do it at a reasonable price. You can't go wrong with the steamed barra with ginger and shallot! Other dishes that were popular with our group included the fried rice, honey king prawns and the clay pots. The complementary dessert was refreshing too!

Although a Canberra resident for many years, I only got to try this restaurantrecently. Amazing. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Sydney Chinatown establishments with a somewhat cool reception, not very friendly or engaging staff and some language barriers. But the food made it all worthwhile!! We enjoyed the best cubed steak with honey and pepper which surpassed my previous favourite... More

I was offered Shark Fin dumplings at Yum Cha. Please don't eat here. Shark finning is wasteful and targets a vulnerable species. The food I did eat was average - if this is the best Yum Cha in Canberra, then some healthy competition is required.

Been here many times past few years. Cant find any better dim sim in Canberra to date. They serve authentic dishes. Dinner is nice as well.

We eat here often (and did under the previous two restaurants in the same place). The live seafood at the entry is a bit confronting for those who are squeamish. Atmosphere is nice being above street level. The orange duck is my favourite. Not the biggest fan of Yum Cha so can't comment.

Celebrating Lunar New Year with many visiting Chinese colleagues at this restaurant was a great occasion. The food was very good and very authentic. Unfortunately on this evening the restaurant was understaffed. Those who served us were polite and efficient but were obviously under pressure. Apparently the kitchen was not handling the busy night well. In China there are always... More

This restaurant serves some of the best yum cha I have ever had. The service was slow today and not particularly friendly but the food was great. The surroundings aren't particularly exciting but at the end of the day it's the food that brings you here

Where we live it's really quite difficult or impossible you can say to buy fresh lobsters & Snow crabs. So we made it an endeavour to drive 3 hours to The Scholar in Dickson to indulge on some fresh Lobsters & Snow Crabs. It was delicious, well I guess it doesn't matter how you cook a lobster as long as... More

It is on the pricey end of Sydney yum Cha places but it still has traditional trolleys and the range is fantastic. Everything we picked was delicious except for the tou fu Hua which was a bit rough....
