Reasonably good food, but no more

We have not been impressed by Deetjen’s. You enter in a suite of reasonably small rooms, which are decorated or “filled” with so many old plates, dolls or animals dressed up… Tables are small, with just enough room for your plates, glasses & cutlery. The roast lamb is laying in a too juicy mix... read more

This restaurant came recommended to us by a friend who said, "It's my favorite eatery on the planet!" Obviously, a high bar had been set for us! This long-established place has been well-preserved with great care by generations of a family that has high regard for quality. They have kept an impressive history and have every reason to be proud... More

We went here for dinner one evening. The inside is very eclectic and cozy but I have a problem when you really can't see your food that you're eating! I had the salmon and it was undercooked and seemed like it was basted in butter. My husband had two appetizers (smart man). We were both underwhelmed.

Tasty enough but not great; excellent "sashimi grade" tuna possibly over presented- food that good would have been better as- well sashimi. My wife's risotto was remarkable for more chicken and shellfish than rice- but the balance was wrong.

All the dishes served are good, but the paella is their signature offering. I have had it on three visits in a row. The historic and quaint atmosphere is special. The photos on the wall are a documentary of Big Sur history.

This place is gorgeous, at night lit by candles. Seriously romantic over the top. However, the food is so lackluster and very disappointing. The waitstaff is very nice and I wish I could give this a good review... We ate the pasta of the day; which was painfully not homemade. The veggie ravioli which was covered in so much cheese... We live in Los Osos and love to take mini-vacations in Carmel. We like to take a rest break on the way up or way back and have now found our favorite stop on the way north. We called to make a reservation but they only take reservations for 6 or more. I think it was Tara that I talked... More

We had breakfast here last month. Good food in a very rustic setting. The cottage fries are excellent and the toast is whole wheat, my favorite! Prices are much better than at nearby Nepenthe, but there is no view of the ocean. It was a Sunday, and the place was mobbed. It was built way back in the 1930's, just... More

Lovely. Eclectic and filled with lots to look at. Delicious breakfast. Good coffee, nice staff. Intimate, warm, fireplaces. Feel the history, well preserved without losing its character. Highly recommended.
