Dinner - Tuesday to Saturday 6.30-9pm. Lunch - Wednesday to Saturday 12-2pm. Tucked away in the heart of idyllic Matlock, Derbyshire, Stones is a modern, eclectic restaurant with a stylish, welcoming interior and a superb modern British menu. The restaurant, which added a new riverside conservatory in May 2013, is jointly run by Kevin Stone, Head Chef, partner, Jade Himsworth and sister, Katie Temple. Stones' riverside conservatory overlooks the babbling River Derwent. The menus change seasonally to reflect the very best in local produce, and the wine to match the food. Stones' philosophy is to provide a fantastic dining experience in a relaxed setting. The dining room which is popular with couples, locals and visitors, is a perfect place for romantic, family or business meals. Stones has been awarded two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence.

It's a little on the pricey side but the food was excellent no less. I don't mind paying a little extra for good service and nice food and this was no exception. It is a little cramped mind so a table in the right part of the restaurant. Best in the area.

We booked a table for two to celebrate an anniversary. Our expectations were not high but our experience was amazing. The staff were attentive but unobtrusive. The meal was exceptional. We had a complimentary amuse bouche which was a delight. We both opted for the lamb rump as a main course. I can honestly say it was the best lamb... More

I was fortunate to receive a voucher for a meal at Stones as part of my retirement. The meal ranks as one of the best we have ever had. From the moment you arrive you are treated with old fashioned curtesy. We were offered a choice of tables. The wine flowed, wonderful food, service first class ( Mrs Stones ).... More

We did not have to mention the birthday because the attention to our needs and politeness of the girls who served us last evening was real and honest. Given the different taste sensations we enjoyed, it was also reassuring that they knew the menu as well as the chef. As for the food, stylish, innovative, and adequate to the style... More

the price you pay includes canopies and a bread board and some chocolates if you have coffee, so if you want all that, then maybe the price is OK, Unfortunately the slow cooked pork neck didn't look like it had been slow cooked at all, it was pink, soft, squidgy and really hard to cut with the knife. My wife... More

Dear UK-Neddy,. We read your observations with interest and will give them due consideration. A couple of notes: Please, in the future, give us or any of our colleagues in the restaurant industry, a chance to put things right at the time. I know it can be embarrassing, but it’s important to any restaurateur that you enjoy your meal in... More

we went for lunch mid week. Lovely bright restaurant next to the river. Welcoming staff. Good value lunchtime menu for the quality of the food. Liked the look of the monthly Sunday lunch club.

We were a late booking but they found a place for four of us. Excellent venue over looking the river and park. Food selection is wide and very well presented. The most notable is the very good service .

We were looking forward to a lovely meal after the reviews on here. Initially all was good and the canopies were a nice touch. First course was a let down, can't make a soft boiled egg!! Main course of the lamb was so undercooked was inedible and a fillet of beef to well done even though I asked for rare.... More
