The Black Bear Inn is a small cozy village pub in the quiet hamlet of Bettws Newydd on the outskirts of Usk. Serving locally sourced traditional food . Our chef Johann Sandler, originally from Paris and with 19 years in the UK has trained in a Michelin Star restaurant. His food is of very high standards and simply delicious.

Good food limited menu

Visited the Bear many time under various owners / operators, food quality is almost always good, the ambiance is excellent but the pub is a little "clicky", that said quality and service is excellent but on a limited menu.

This pub has the potential to be one of the best. The service is great, the food is good and the landlady is very friendly. No complaints at all there. However, the pub has a policy of allowing dogs, which in itself is fine and I wouldn't normally have an issue with it. The drawback is, the pub is too... More

This review has made me so sad. If you could only have spoken to me at the time of your visit, I would have been only too happy to help resolve this. We have a room that is dog free, and at any time our customers are our priority. More

I went for dinner with my son as part of our rugby world cup odyssey to UK in October. What a wonderful night, great food & lovely locals. Highly recommended!

We were in Cardiff for the RWC recently and drove around the gorgeous hills in Wales in the surrounding areas and stumbled upon this lovely pub. The owner was so friendly and the food was great! Highly recommend the Welsh lamb. Lovely atmosphere, particularly with the fire going.

I came on a week night to celebrate our wedding anniversary with my husband and we weren't disappointed. We were made to feel very welcome. The black bear is a traditional pub serving good local beers and cider. The menu was on a blackboard and consisted of a range of hearty dishes. We thought it was excellent value. I loved... More

Cannot really fault any part of the meal, all three of us had 3 courses and not one complaint. Service excellent and the surroundings were cosy.

We went for a Saturday lunch. Friendly welcome. Fairly small blackboard menu. We had great vegetable soup followed by wild salmon risotto and sea bass and then a cheese plate. They have a new chef and the food was fresh and tasty. We will definitely return.

On arrival warm welcome, tradional Sunday lunch served with good array of vegetables (i.e. butternut squash as one!) Plus bonus of "first class" well kept real ales (Wye Valley Hereford Pale Ale) Only minor gripe, Yorkshire Pudding, just up your game from an mini frozen type.........This very minor indiscretion will not stopping us going again.
