We had dinner here last week after visiting this place several years ago when the food was excellant. The hosts were welcoming and friendly and it is clearly a comfortable local pub. The starters of thai fishcakes were small and over cooked. The beef pie had a lid hat was inedible, chips dry. I felt it was a shame as... More

Had dinner in this pub as it was the closest to Usk Valley b&b. It is very small but intimate. The food was good value and very tasty. The staff were really cheerful and welcoming.

Ruth's back! - so the Black Bear is back on top of the list of my favourite pubs. Excellent food, good (local) beer, excellent hospitality, great atmosphere. Dog and child friendly village hub. You won't find a better pub.

Booked at the last minute but got a table for 6 (4 adults 2 children). The Sunday lunch menu was lovely and the owner couldn't have done more to accommodate the children (or the adult with the mint sauce obsession!). Extra gravy or vegetables were no problem and the creme brûlée for pudding was to die for. As an extra... More

While visiting in London we heard of a quaint little inn located in Bettws Newdd, Wales. We decided to take a trip down an check it out. Upon our arrival, we were met by Ruth and Michael. The hospitality and atmosphere was wonderful. The service was second to none and the food was the best we had during our 10... More

It has been many years since I have eaten at this place and it was well known for it's menu! It would appear that we have missed a tennant running the place and now the original owner is back to build up the trade. The menu was limited but was a decent variety to choose from. We chose the fish... More

Lovely Sunday, so we thought we'd have a walk in Coed-y-Bwnydd (known locally as bluebell wood) and it seemed sensible to visit the nearby Black Bear afterwards. I'm genuinely glad we did! Bettws Newydd is a tiny hamlet nestling among trees on a hillside above the River Usk, at its centre this old inn which has bags of character. The... More
