A lovely old inn situated in the country, stumbled across The Black Bear Inn by chance, driving through the lanes between Usk and Raglan. Visited today for Sunday lunch. A really nice welcome from the lady behind the bar, a warm cosy place if you have sight of the open fire blazing with logs. The menu was adequate, very good... More

Used to be my favourite pub, worldwide, bar none. Still pretty good, but I'm afraid it's not what it was when Ruth was in town. The problem now is that the Inn at Penallt is snapping at their heels and they need to watch the ball if they are to keep their reputation. I'll stay loyal, but I long for... More

The minute you walk into this pub you know you are going to have a brilliant time. The crackling logs & the unspoilt ancient bar combine with the welcome from Rayanne to give that wonderful chilled out feeling that comes from the anticipation of an afternoon in a proper old fashioned pub. And so it went on, beautifully kept beer... More

On entering the bar, being welcomed with the smell of a burning log fire on a cold day is something in itself. We were given a warm welcome also by the owners of the black bear and had no trouble in being given a table. We both ordered a sunday roast and both plates were cleared, food cooked perfectly and... The new owners are amazing. We visited over christmas and had a great experience. The hospitality was outstanding. Lunch menu small but perfectly formed with a unique combination of Welsh and Canadian dishes. The Chowder and the Lentil and Goats Cheese Charlotte were really impressive. The Butty Bach and range of wines were excellent also. Highly recommended for a perfect... More

we heard there were new owners so we gave Sunday lunch a go and we're delighted wi the results. It's a bit chilly when your first in this time of year but we were seated by the open fire so it was cosy. Such a small place is affected by the drafts coming in and out so an open fire... More

Recommended by a friend and the researched on here! What a great location, quaint village pub quite away from anywhere. As usual it was raining in Wales, however walking into the pub with the huge open fire burning away was one of the warmest welcomes! Lovely friendly staff, lovely pub. Now the food. For one not a massive selection, my... More

This pub is just a few hundred yards from the Usk Valley B&B where we were staying. Very helpful staff who were well-informed about gluten-free options on their menu. The food itself was very well presented and enjoyable - good king prawn starter and honeyed duck main, and a nice crème brulee to finish. Good choice of beer, cider and... More
