The Royal Oak is a typical English pub, with an area for serving food away from the main bar. It could do with a facelift and seemed a bit dreary, but the food was good and portions are big- my wife and I settled for the smaller portions on offer and they were plenty big enough for us. Staff were... More

The Royal Oak restaurant never ceases to offer good food, and a wide variety of best value meals. The menu provides a good selection to suit all tastes and pockets and notably they do not overlook vegetarian diet. While the restaurant is more comfortable, eating in the bar is equally good. The Oak is in the centre of the village... More

Rather than eat in the camper van every night we decided to eat out at the Royal Oak. I had char grilled chicken and Lindsay had bacon chops. This a busy place in the evening, even so we did not have to wait long for our food. It looked good tasted great and was well presented. All in all a... More

We try and stay in the village at some point during the year and always enjoy a visit at the Royal Oak. The food is excellent and portions are generous, the staff are friendly, the food is generally on the table quickly too. The beer is top notch. The pub is always welcoming and family friendly.

We had our annual Braithwaite holiday and eat here often. Nice leisurely meal, we tended to have only one course, they serve larger portions. We enjoyed there apple mash and they cook chips from fresh potatoes (not the dreaded frozen). Fantastic food, great taste and presentation. Great value best in Braithwaite, not to be missed. Roll on next year and... More

Visited with family for an evening meal, really busy but we managed to squeeze all 10 of us in. Was told to try the pork belly which we did and it was excellent except the crackling wasn't crackling enough on my plate. I have picky children eaters and they struggled to find something they liked. Good selection of ales, outdoor... More

We stay in Thornthwaite when we holiday in the Lake District and we were looking for somewhere local to walk out for food in the evening. It's fair to say that whichever place you look at on TripAdvisor gets mixed reviews, nearly every place is rated anywhere from 5 stars to 1 star. In the end we picked the Royal... More

Enjoyed beers, well kept and well served, both from the local Jennings brewery and also an excellent Wychwood guest ale, during our stay at HPB's Ivy House just round the corner. Food was good pub grub fare and I can thoroughly recommend the olives and breads appetisers first too! Lamb shank was especially good. Just what the doctor ordered after... More

They do portions for the smaller appetite which is great - and as always the food and atmosphere was first class.
