A special kind of place

I ate at this place on several occassions since 2009 and I still feel like coming back. The beauty of this place is in the simplicity of the meals as well as the whole surroundings. Dont expect extraordinary cuisine but the value (food +nice service) to price ratio is fantastic!

Me and my friends had quita a bad experience there, would never recommend it! First, the staff is incredibly unfriendly, second the food is served and tastes like in a military canteen and in the end its a total rip off because they charge you for things that seem included. Also the location is dirty and way too many people... More

Grotto Baldoria has an italian name, a chef from Grigioni, is based in Ticino, is full of people speakin' a blend of German, French, Italian and a little English...gotcha!?!?! Ticino, as the whole Verbano (Lake Maggiore) area, is lovely...is not just the very best of Italy and Switzerland dough...(what a 'Godblessed' mix theoretically!!!) is because all is very sweet: mountains... We found this restaurant to be the best for casual meals and will return on our next visit to Ascona.

This is a great place, a great alternative to all other conventional restaurants. They offer one menu, with salad, it's good quality and local cuisine. Both starter and dessert (salami and cheese) are served on a big wooden board which is passed around the tables. Later you can help yourself to some cake or dessert as well. All in all... More

"Grotto" is a famous establishment type of restaurant in north Ticino. Although it's not a closed space, but only a covered yard, it gives the feeling of a tight and packed dining place, with more than a hundred guests crowded and being efficiently fed by the well trained waiters crew. We had a seven course meal, topped by beer, wine,... More

This has to be one of the most over-rated restaurants we have ever eaten in. Where to start, the proprietor is rude, miserable and not at all welcoming, we got the impression that he wasn't bothered whether anyone came in to eat or not. We watched as he ignored people that were queueing to come in to the restaurant. We... More

The only thing you can chose are drinks, all the food is put in front of your nose by the waiter or passed who asks to pass it on to the next table when you served yourself. Cool popular friendly ambiente, 5 course menu for little more than 20 francs. We love it!!

A must if you are visiting Ascona and want a very informal, cheap meal in typical local style! The owner squashes in as many people as possible from the long queue for the 7 or 9 o'clock sittings, so that we shared a table and made new friends. The food is simple, plentiful -7 courses ! - and tasty , the cold... We were invited by friends to experience a traditional grotto restaurant. Everything about this Baldoria makes it worth a visit, the menu is set, so no need to decide, you can expect one delicious serving after the next! The atmosphere is buzzing and the staff work hard to make sure you enjoy your evening. My only tip would be to... More
