My first Grotto experience

"Grotto" is a famous establishment type of restaurant in north Ticino. Although it's not a closed space, but only a covered yard, it gives the feeling of a tight and packed dining place, with more than a hundred guests crowded and being efficiently fed by the well trained waiters crew. We had a... read more

This has to be one of the most over-rated restaurants we have ever eaten in. Where to start, the proprietor is rude, miserable and not at all welcoming, we got the impression that he wasn't bothered whether anyone came in to eat or not. We watched as he ignored people that were queueing to come in to the restaurant. We... More

The only thing you can chose are drinks, all the food is put in front of your nose by the waiter or passed who asks to pass it on to the next table when you served yourself. Cool popular friendly ambiente, 5 course menu for little more than 20 francs. We love it!!

A must if you are visiting Ascona and want a very informal, cheap meal in typical local style! The owner squashes in as many people as possible from the long queue for the 7 or 9 o'clock sittings, so that we shared a table and made new friends. The food is simple, plentiful -7 courses ! - and tasty , the cold... We were invited by friends to experience a traditional grotto restaurant. Everything about this Baldoria makes it worth a visit, the menu is set, so no need to decide, you can expect one delicious serving after the next! The atmosphere is buzzing and the staff work hard to make sure you enjoy your evening. My only tip would be to... More

What a surprise this restaurant was! Very very down to earth - the owner serves the food himself (even if he looks like a grumpy old man). However don't judge a book by its cover. Just good Swiss Italian food served without an bling bling! A true gem in Ascona!

The Grotto Baldoria is a must in Ascona. It is a typical swiss italian restaurant in a familiar atmosphere. It has had the same menu every day for 22 years. Swiss italian food served in a rustical way. Very cheap and definitely worth it. It is always really crowded, be sure to reserve your table at 19:00 or around 21:00.... More

I'm a local and this is the first place I take friends out when they come and visit. It's cheap (iirc, 16 CHF for salami+salad+first+second+dessert, drinks not included) and tasty. You won't be able to choose: there's only ONE menu that changes every day. You'll be sitting at one of their tightly packed tables, which you'll probably share with other... More

The biggest plus for this restaurant is its menu-free approach. There's just the house menu, which I am told doesn't change much, or at all. Open with some bread and salami, which is passed around. Move onto some carpaccio, which topping up the wine. Then a pasta round. And finally the meat course, with polenta on the side. Soak up... More

Switzerland isn't the cheapest place to visit at the best of times, and the lakeside town of Ascona in particular doesn't offer much in the way of bargains - so it's always a pleasure to find good value when it comes to food and drink. Grotto Baldoria provides exactly that, combined with a unique and authentic dining experience. As other... More
