Description: Histoire Ancienne restaurant in Calais is a classic bistro with 1930s art deco dcor, fresco painting that recalls Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha prints, traditional zinc bar, tables laid in white linen, harlequin floor and open fireplace where local fish and meats are grilled. So far, so intriguing. Patrick Comte is a fourth-generation chef who trained in some of Paris most superb restaurants, including Le Crillon and Prunier, and here uses the finest local ingredients in inventive dishes like duck tartare with comfit tomatoes and parmesan shavings, grilled sea bream marinated in lemon, coriander and ginger. Order the warm chocolate cake with molten interior with pistachio cream at the beginning of your meal. Theres a proper vegetarian menu, too.

As it was a Tuesday we hadn't booked but when we arrived at about 7.45pm we were given the only free table. Service a bit slow but that's understandable as the restaurant was completely full, and with French people: we were the only British in there. Food was good - the most fantastic chips I've EVER had - and for... More

We planned to eat here, but checked up and down Rue Royale first. It was head and shoulders above the other places. Good choice on menu, friendly service and clearly a favorite with Calais residents. Service a little slow, but probably because we came in at nearly eight pm, when the place was close to full and the kitchen would... More

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and it serves great food. In our opinion it is well worth the price of the tunnel or ferry. We will be returning soon. NB it's worth using their website to book a table.

We went here for lunch before our ferry back, having selected it on the basis of its Tripadvisor rating. We had a very good experience, in the company of locals out with their families and English tourists about to return to the ferry. I had a starter of marrow bone, a main course of sea bass and a dessert of... More

My husband and I have had lunch here twice. The restaurant is beautifully appointed and is very popular with locals. They do a very good plat de jour - two courses for just under 17 euros - and the food is consistently good. Parking is available nearby and it's very close to the ferry terminal.

Our party of 4 had the most amazing lunch. Everyone's food was outstanding, the cod exceptional. Lovely white table cloths, attentive polite staff. Will definitely make the trip from London again.

A traditional French bistro serving exceptional food in a great atmosphere. This was our first time at this very impressive restaurant we arrived without a booking at about 7.30pm on a Wednesday evening and given a tremendous welcome. I would probably suggest at weekends make a reservation as it is obviously very popular. The food really was excellent, the décor... More

After reading reviews for this restaurant we decided it was the one for us. If you want to eat as the French do this is the place I highly recommend. On arrival on a Friday night at 8pm (we did reserve a table in advance) we where shown to our table by a pleasant waitress. We decided to eat off... More
