Badly cut pasta and Ragu were amazing

Hidden in the heart of old town Volterra is a Tuscan gem of a restaurant with fabulous food and wine. The badly cut pasta (maltagliati) and Ragu of Chianina beef were unlike anything I've had before. The place is in the heart of the historical town so I suggest to book in advance as it is very full. The offer of a variety of local plates and good alternatives is vast. Also the restaurant tries to elaborate in a high quality way. The cost is non the high side as all restaurants in Italy placed in... More

After a week's worth of delicious meals in Tuscany, we landed at La Vecchia Lira on our last night of the vacation. It turned out to be one of the top meals of the trip. The menu, while having plenty of basics for the less adventurous, was very inventive. I had razor clams in a melon cream sauce, followed by... More

Having a gluten/dairy free child to find food for abroad is difficult but here nothing was too much trouble. The lovely staff took us through the menu to find suitable food for our son & offered to cook anything else he might like! We ordered 2 starters to share, the spelt was absolutely delicious & the presentation impressive! Our mains... More

Sadly we only had time for a drink here. The menu looked great as did the many meals we could see being served and it all seemed to be reasonably priced too. The place was very popular and it seemed very popular with local residents too. The service was great and the staff very friendly The menu also offered gluten... More

We ate here and we had a fantastic meal! The food was quite unusual but delicious. A twist to each local dish and beautifully presented. The only disappointment was the lack of rosé wine!!

Looking for a gluten-free place for my niece I stumbled into la Vecchia Lira, way past italian lunch time. The staff was super helpful and I managed to get real gluten free food to go for the girl, and amazingly good pappardelle also to go for me. I was really impressed and I would go back for dinner next time... More

Had an excellent dinner here after being prompted by others positive reviews. The staff were excellent especially the main waiter who we assumed was the owner. He made up for our pathetic Italian with a patient explanation of the menu. We ordered the leg of chicken which was beautiful (but gigantic) and the local steak which was succulent and cooked... walking around town my wife got inspired from this local cafeteria like restaurant where many local came to have lunch. As you pick your food cafeteria style I was reserved as for quality. It turned out to be the opposite. My kids enjoyed delicious lasagne as well as the local to scan variant of carbonara. I tasted perfect prepared bruschetta... More

When last we were in Volterra at La Vecchia Lira, I had a pasta dish with a mortadella sauce that was so unusual and delicious I had to have it again. Crushed when it was not on the dinner menu. Elated when they made it for me anyway! We had also promised ourselves to have one of the fabulous looking... More
