We had heard and read great things about this place. Our expectations were not nearly met. To be clear, Salvatore 1958 is not a bad restaurant. It is simply ordinary at best.
I love fish, but the amberjack I had was slightly over cooked and...didn’t have much flavor. Not so over cooked that I would send it back, but nothing I would recommend. It came with “potatoes in a jacket with olive oil.” That is another way of saying baked potatoes, which I always enjoy, except when they come out at room temperature as these did. My wife’s lamb dish was tasty. I’d give it a solid 4. Another member of our party had the amberjack cooked in a different style but also over cooked. At least his potatoes were warm (not hot, warm). Another’s beef dish was described by another member of our party as “fine, but nothing special.” They do have a nice wine list but I ordered a 2015 Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Reservation and didn’t notice until I tasted it that they had given me a 2018 Antinori Chianti Classico. Partly the waiter’s fault, partly my cataracts. I decided to keep the bottle since it had been opened and I’d had a chance to object, but pointed it out to the waiter when the bill came and he charged me for the original bottle (and yes, I sometimes drink red wine with fish:-). His initial response was “It’s only a four Euro difference.” I wasn’t expecting him to fall over himself apologizing, but I wasn’t expecting to be dismissed either. A simple “sorry, I’ll fix it” would have been nice. I’m also dubious that four Euros reflected the value difference, but at that point I just wanted to leave. I haven’t yet commented on the service, but that exchange reflects the lack of any apparent interest by the waiters in offering anything approaching graciousness. They were reasonably efficient, not very, just reasonably, and made no effort to demonstrate any interest in our enjoying the evening. As for desserts, they may be great, but we had no interest in finding out. Not a terrible experience, just a disappointing one from what is supposed to be a fine restaurant.More
