4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014 NEW

Went here with a group of friends whilst visiting and had a great time. As there were ten of us we had a private room on the top floor and were well looked after. The food was of a very high standard and the portions much bigger than a lot of comparable restaurants. Taking your own drink was a new... More

My boyfriend and I had dinner here on Friday night. It was honestly one of the nicest meals we've have both had in a long time. Most 2 course menus offer small portions, the same cannot be said here. My boyfriend ordered a steak which was cooked to perfection. BYO makes it very affordable. I have already recommended Cafe Essence... More

Recommended by relatives, this was a disappointment from the start. It could look better from the outside and it gives a sort of dentist's waiting room feel inside with rather uncomfortable seats. We were shown to the table by an outstretched hand from the waitress, something I have only experienced in the Sol Rio in Westport. Subsequent guests were 'shown'... More

Love this place - great staff and a simple menu - just order off the chalkboard, high quality and very reasonable, BYOB makes it even easier on the wallet. Has become a regular haunt over the past year and will continue to be so Fresh, fresh , fresh and simply cooked. Easy.

Having eaten here on numerous occasions over the years I was looking forward to a return visit - this was short lived. The service was poor and the food worse. A pathetic attempt at a chowder - how can you get this so wrong!! Bland and watery. Peppered beef turned out to be an over cooked piece of fatty steak... More

The fish in this mainly fish restaurant couldn't have been more fresh or beautifully cooked. There are other options such as steak, which was delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff are amazing and so friendly. They go out of their way to make your visit a good one. Unless you are in the know, they are unlicensed and therefore... More

I booked at short notice for dinner with two friends travelling from England. Despite it being Tuesday, the place was absolutely packed. The food couldn't be faulted-the scallops with parsnip puree were miraculous, the turbot superb and even something simple like homemade pate was very tasty. The service was a little slow, but every table was in action and I... More

My husband and I visited Cafe Essence for the third time for my birthday in May. On our first visit about a year ago I couldn't rate the place high enough and left a very positive review on tripadvisor but I'm sorry to say that on each subsequent vist we've been let down a little more each time. Some of... More

Went to this restaurant with 6 friends and we were all more than impressed with quality of the superb seafood dishes we enjoyed. The menu was varied and the taste amazing. I will definately go again and would recommend this restaurant to any seafood lover. There were also meat dishes available but we didn't try these.

Dont underestimate the low key look of this place. Simply the food is Michelin standard. I cant applaud it enough. I had the scallops to start followed by the stuffed chicken with a red wine jus. Just awesome.
