The Golden Lion has the largest thatched roof in the north of England with working open coal fires and bespoke oak furniture. We pride ourselves with friendly staff and fresh food cooked on site by our talented chefs, no ready made meals here! Independantly owned by a family from the town we are a freehold business stocking real ale, an extensive single malt collection and fine wines as well as your usual draught products. We are open from 9am Monday to Saturday serving breakfast, lunch and dinner then from 11am Sundays serving our traditional roasts 12 til 6pm. (Some might say we serve the best coffee in the town, or even the north east!)The current climate hasn't seemed to effect us as we are getting busier week by week from opening in 2005. It is great to see new and old faces each day and are looking forward to opening our function room soon.

I frequent here at least twice a week. However, today found the service leaving a lot to be desired. The young staff today seemed more interested at chatting at the bar than dealing with customers and tables. Hope this is a blip and normal fabulous service resumes.

I find the service to be a bit slow in this place if you're ordering food, doesn't seem to cope well with busier periods. The food I did enjoy though and it's a nice place, has a little beer garden out back, no play area for kids though.

Been here a few times and don't have a bad word to say about the place! Decor is beautiful, staff are professional and polite, food is gorgeous! Last visit was for a large family meal. There was around 30 of us, we were seated on 3, long tables, but were close enough to be chatting amongst ourselves. We pre-ordered food... More

Popped in after shopping in aldi, was seated straight away 👍drinks brought quick too 👍 ordered and served pretty quick all with a smile 😄. I had the pork with all the trimmings and I am a serious critic as I can cook a mean Sunday lunch but in all fairness I was well impressed only thing missing was a... More

Me and my family like to see ourselves as irregular regulars, visiting maybe once or twice a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. We are never disappointed. The ambience is welcoming, the staff are experienced and warm and the food always delivers. We always have a thorough read of the specials blackboard although most of us usually revert to type and... Popped in for lunch Saturday lunch time it was busy but wasn't packed the food was excellent and the chips are home made which is always a bonus. The service was a little slow but like it says on the menu good food takes time I would rather wait and enjoy good food.

We have been numerous times as it's just round the corner from our home which is handy. Each time we have waited for tables to be cleaned, orders to be taken then for the food to arrive. Sometimes it's been up to an hour before we have eaten which isn't ideal when you have small hungry children that get restless.... More

Visited here for family members birthday. Nice portion sizes and welcoming atmosphere. Meal deals are good value for money and the smaller portions are a good idea
