The Golden Lion has the largest thatched roof in the north of England with working open coal fires and bespoke oak furniture. We pride ourselves with friendly staff and fresh food cooked on site by our talented chefs, no ready made meals here! Independantly owned by a family from the town we are a freehold business stocking real ale, an extensive single malt collection and fine wines as well as your usual draught products. We are open from 9am Monday to Saturday serving breakfast, lunch and dinner then from 11am Sundays serving our traditional roasts 12 til 6pm. (Some might say we serve the best coffee in the town, or even the north east!)The current climate hasn't seemed to effect us as we are getting busier week by week from opening in 2005. It is great to see new and old faces each day and are looking forward to opening our function room soon.

Went for tea as we are having carpets fitted and cant get to the kitchen. Chose there as they do gluten free food for the wife, although it wasn't busy it took 55minutes for the food to arrive, the kids had sausage and mash and a Thai curry, wife had pork belly and I had fish and chips. We go regularly for lunch and have never had a disappointing meal.We always choose from the specials board as there are always delicious fish dishes to choose from. The ingredients are top notch and the combinations are imaginative. The dishes are very attractive to the eye and mouthwatering to the taste buds.

One of my favourite restaurants in the town. It always has a nice cosy atmosphere, particularly with the authentic wood burning fire. Great to meet up with friends or dine as a couple, the chicken a-la-creme is my favourite dish, the sauce is gorgeous!

Visited this pub for a bar meal. Opted for the 2 course special and was very impressed. The meal was presented and tasted like what you would expect to be served in a top notch restaurant and there was so much of it. Absolutely delicious and very reasonable.

Went in on Sunday expecting a good roast as I have eaten here during the week before. Big big let down Starters great main, Main course arrived all 3 meals were cold gravy they must have pored from the fridge. When we first walked in I seen the roast with two massive Yorkshires, the mouth watered. Only to find out... More

I probaly visit this Pub restaurant more than any other in town, good value and always something different on the daily blackboard specials, depending on the time of year( wild boar pheasant etc,I try to avoid the busier times of the day as this is a popular pub restaurant.

Visited with my sister last week. I ordered bacon and chicken salad and my sister ordered the veggie burger and chips. We were both a bit deflated with what we got...my chicken was cold. I've never had a chicken and bacon salad before, where the chicken was cold...I prefer it hot so wouldn't go for this dish again. My sister... More

The staff were very over worked and it was obvious that The Golden Lion needed more staff! Staff did not want to engage with customers at the bar when ordering a drink or even when people wanted to pay their bill! Stop being so mean and employ more young people with time to be mentored to give good customer service... More
