The Golden Lion has the largest thatched roof in the north of England with working open coal fires and bespoke oak furniture. We pride ourselves with friendly staff and fresh food cooked on site by our talented chefs, no ready made meals here! Independantly owned by a family from the town we are a freehold business stocking real ale, an extensive single malt collection and fine wines as well as your usual draught products. We are open from 9am Monday to Saturday serving breakfast, lunch and dinner then from 11am Sundays serving our traditional roasts 12 til 6pm. (Some might say we serve the best coffee in the town, or even the north east!)The current climate hasn't seemed to effect us as we are getting busier week by week from opening in 2005. It is great to see new and old faces each day and are looking forward to opening our function room soon.

This was my first visit to the restaurant, and on a busy Easter Sunday the meal was enjoyable and the atmosphere relaxed. My only criticism would be that the service was a little hit and miss. Food arrived at 1910. 3 out of 4 burgers wrong with mayonnaise etc after plain burgers ordered. Sent back 1 came back I am sure they simply washed burger as traces of mayonnaise could... More

The staff were very over worked and it was obvious that The Golden Lion needed more staff! Staff did not want to engage with customers at the bar when ordering a drink or even when people wanted to pay their bill! Stop being so mean and employ more young people with time to be mentored to give good customer service... More

We arrived at this chaotic restaurant at 6.30 pm on Saturday 11th April. We had to locate a table by ourselves and duly placed an order at approximately 6.45 pm. Two of our first choices were sold out despite still being on the menu board then a subsequent third choice was also sold out again while still on the menu... More

I've been here numerous times and I've never been disappointed. The food here is simply the best pub grub in Hartlepool (but in fairness there is no real competetion these days). The food and prices would be best suited for a restaurant rather than a public house though. Its always clean and tidy, the service is always pretty good even... More

Always enjoyed food at the golden lion so thought I would call in for a quick bite to eat at dinner time. Ordered the feta & olive salad and when it came I was blown away at its presentation and the portion size was incredible for just £5/6! It was without a doubt the best salad I've ever ordered when... Dined here a couple of weeks ago as a large group. We were told we had to pre order-waited over an hour for the starters to arrive and once they did not everyones arrived so some just cancelled thier starters. We then waited nearly another hour for the mains to arrive (by which point they had already brought out 2... More
