Description: The kitchen at the White Swan is focused on doing very little to excellent local ingredients with very rarely more than three flavours on a plate. We make just about everything from scratch in cluding the ketchup and we charge more for it than we would need to if everything came out of a freezer via a microwave. If you are looking for prissy and plastic fine dining then don't expect that here. If you are looking for mountains of cheap food and you don't care where it came from then there are better places to get it.However if you love proper food then I also promise you service from people who are genuinely pleased to be working in our lovely Inn. The AA deems our food good enough for 2 rosettes - and that is without a single smear, smudge or froth in sight. At the other end of the scale, we don't do wrapped butter portions or packets of sauce either (or piped musak). If you want real food in a relaxed experience with great service and a happy atmosphere then come on down. If you want something else - then don't say I didn't warn you.Victor Buchanan - Owner

I stayed at The White Swan recently as part of a shooting party. The bar is really cosy and atmospheric and is a great place to have a drink or two before dining. The food on the night was excellent as was the service throughout our stay. We will definitely be back

Have eaten here many times over the years but this was our first lunch in the bar. Price wise it's at the top end , especially the wines, but can never fault the food. I had the ginger pig bacon chop whilst my wife had the cottage pie which she said was gorgeous.

We visited on Friday on our way to Whitby. unfortunately the pub had stopped serving food when we got there but they told us about a little deli next door called Feast and let us grab something and bring it into the pub. We ordered some really nice coffees in the pub and sat by the fire. It's a really... More

We had The Bothy for a private meal for 20 adults and kids and it was fantastic. Lovely food and very friendly service. Highly recommended if celebrating a special occasion

Sorry guys but this experience was dreadful, we thought after visiting some lovely little pubs on our yorkshire break, that this lunch in the Black Swan would be a perfect end to our New Year, however, for those with children, don't bother, rude staff and would only accommodate us in the TEAROOM! I'm sure if we came as a couple... More

We had lunch here on a cold day and sat in front of a roaring log fire which was good. The decor was a bit shabby and slightly incongruous to the rest of the place which looked more upmarket. The food was ok but the hand cut chips were definitely frozen jobbies We asked for sauces and vinegar, they forgot... More

Almost exactly a year to the day after our previous family visit, we were back for Sunday lunch. Food was excellent, and we couldn't resist pudding. Service was friendly and efficient. Toss in an open fire and this is everything a Sunday lunch in a pub should be

Just had a large gathering here with friends. I felt the food that was served could be better. We were presented with a few small dishes with enough for 2 carrots each, and the SPROUTS were inedible as they were definitely raw and tasted really mustardy. We did remark on this but the waitress said she didn't cook them and... More

I visited the White Swan with my partner and our toddler after going to see Father Christmas on the steam trains. We arrived just before 12pm and hadn't booked a table but luckily it wasn't busy at that time although it soon filled up. I ordered pate for starter and beef for main. Food was nice and good quality, and... More
