Description: The kitchen at the White Swan is focused on doing very little to excellent...
The kitchen at the White Swan is focused on doing very little to excellent local ingredients with very rarely more than three flavours on a plate. We make just about everything from scratch in cluding the ketchup and we charge more for it than we would need to if everything came out of a freezer via a microwave. If you are looking for prissy and plastic fine dining then don't expect that here. If you are looking for mountains of cheap food and you don't care where it came from then there are better places to get it.However if you love proper food then I also promise you service from people who are genuinely pleased to be working in our lovely Inn. The AA deems our food good enough for 2 rosettes - and that is without a single smear, smudge or froth in sight. At the other end of the scale, we don't do wrapped butter portions or packets of sauce either (or piped musak). If you want real food in a relaxed experience with great service and a happy atmosphere then come on down. If you want something else - then don't say I didn't warn you.Victor Buchanan - Owner

Called in today for Saturday lunch on our way to Whitby. From the outside the hotel seems OK, on entering the bar the hotel seems OK. We ordered food and although slightly priced high for lunch we were not at all disappointed. I had the ploughmans which was enough to feed to 2 ploughmen. My wife had soup and sandwich... More

We had not visited for several years due to an indifferent attitude, average food and VERY expensive drinks - a bottle of house wine costing us £25. Thinking it must have changed we called in and the restaurant was almost empty. Food was still average and expensive. Drank tap water this time. Dont think we will call in again. This... More

Well Mr Denbury. I wonder if have stopped to think what effect a 'terrible' rated review like the one you have just written has on the team of 35 people (all but one of whom are local) that work (and sometimes even eat out) here. We have never charged £25 for house wine either although we do have a bottle... More

This is my favourite place in Pickering for a good meal and / or a nice pint by a roaring fire. Lovely

Ok January is not the greatest time to visit the local pub, but despite the two roaring fires the White Swan lacked warmth. Looking tired - time for a new look

This was booked over the phone for my Mothers 65th birthday as a special meal. We were sent sample menus which looked great. Arrived at 7.20pm for our 7.30 reservation to an empty restaurant. The waitress gave us the menus, which differed from the ones we sent so we enquired was there another menu available? She huffily said "I presumed... More

Have eaten here many times over the years but this was our first lunch in the bar. Price wise it's at the top end , especially the wines, but can never fault the food. I had the ginger pig bacon chop whilst my wife had the cottage pie which she said was gorgeous.

We visited on Friday on our way to Whitby. unfortunately the pub had stopped serving food when we got there but they told us about a little deli next door called Feast and let us grab something and bring it into the pub. We ordered some really nice coffees in the pub and sat by the fire. It's a really... More

Four Legged friends of the canine variety are truely welcome. We have special bowls for them and owners can sit or dine in the snug or bar with them. We also have some dog friendly rooms so do bring them back and stay. We own Feast next door so between lunch and 4 or 5pm (depending on the season) we... More
